Religion and Culture

The specific objective of the programs in the Department of Religion and Culture is to ascertain and examine the human experiences and the processes involved in the emergence, growth, sustenance or modification of religious ideas and institutions and their implications for the individual and society. To this end, the department will provide students with an in-depth study of the traditions, texts, and themes of the major religions of the world through a variety of perspectives. The programs are designed to reflect the diversity of content as well as approaches in the academic study of religion.

Students intending to enter a major or honours program in the Department of Religion and Culture are advised to plan their program at an early stage in consultation with the Department Head or a designated advisor.

Studies in Religious Traditions Programs

The Department of Religion and Culture offers majors and honours programs in Studies in Religious Traditions to meet the following objectives:

  • to offer significant exposure to all Studies in Religious Traditions majors and honours students to the central themes, ideas, and institutions of the major world religions;
  • to provide necessary methodological orientation for the academic study of religion to all Religious Studies majors and honours students; and
  • to develop a specialization in one religious tradition and impart basic language training which will constitute the foundation for graduate level work in the area of specialization for honours students.

Studies in Religion and Culture Programs

Studies in Religion and Culture explores the role of religion in human affairs ranging across its influence on the views, values, institutions, intellectual history, literature, and the arts of diverse cultural groups. The program examines the religion's  creative impact  on and its place in issues confronting the modern world.  The program offers the opportunity to approach religion from  disciplinary perspectives in the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences to better understand how religion has influenced and continues to influence human relationships and its effects on groups, civilizations and our collective cultural heritage.  There are three major inter-related theme areas in the program: Religion, Culture and Society; Religion, Literature and the Arts; Religion and Gender. Departmental offerings in these areas give  breadth and flexibility of coursework in the program and are complemented by a range of related courses that can be taken from disciplines outside the department.
