Established in 1992, the University of Saskatchewan Distinguished Researcher Award is presented semi-annually to a faculty member who has made a major contribution to knowledge or artistic creativity in their area of expertise.

The recipients of this award are innovators in areas as diverse as the humanities, sciences, social sciences, engineering, law, pharmacy, education, and veterinary medicine. Their various efforts have:

• significantly improved the quality of life for schizophrenic patients
• dramatically reduced deaths from land slides in the Hong Kong region
• greatly enhanced our understanding of Canadian aboriginal/white relations
• advanced the world's knowledge of how plant cells divide
• led to law reform with respect to lending and secured financing in several Third World countries
• helped Canadian provinces evaluate the reliability of their electrical power systems
• led to breakthroughs in the design and construction of Tokamak reactors used to harness fusion as an energy source
• provided new approaches to the teaching of reading in elementary schools.

Their basic research has also had commercial applications -- from animal vaccines that have dramatically reduced losses from common livestock diseases to promising new tools for forest and crop biotechnology.
