Advice to Faculty Members

Once you have research results indicating some commercial application:

  • sort out issues related to intellectual property (IP):
    • ownership
    • patentability
    • possibility of infringement

  • visit UST (University of Saskatchewan Technologies Inc.):
    • pay a visit before you publish
    • a preliminary U.S. patent application can be prepared in days

  • decide whether to license or form a company

A trend observed in research with commerical application

Before — problem, solve, publish
Now — problem, solve, protect, publish
