UCACS Practical Skills Training

Livestock Handling

Description: Participants will be introduced to the concepts of proper livestock handling through an oral presentation and live animal demonstrations. They will be taught the appropriate safety practices (for humans and livestock) while moving livestock out of pens, through alley ways and within a chute handling system. Participants will learn how and when to appropriately apply “pressure” and release it to facilitate proper movement of livestock. Following the live animal demonstrations, participants will be given the opportunity to practice proper moving sorting, handling, and restraint under the supervision and direction of the instructors. Additionally, participants will restrain an animal using a squeeze chute, be shown how to orientate and halter an animal without risk to the animal or person. The main objective will be to teach participants how to perform these procedures with a minimum amount of pressure and stress on the animals. Therefore, special care will be taken to avoid exciting or fatiguing the animals.
