Day 10: Wednesday, June 15, 2005

After breakfast Bill stated to change the slowly leaking tire on the blue van, which we had not used since we arrived. He was quickly swarmed by locals looking to “help”. Pam, Sarah, Neil, Al and I traveled to the Los Cavellinas site. Many more local children arrived today than before, and at one point there were over 20. It is likely due in no small part to the treats we kept giving them. They were very eager to help and would carry our equipment as we moved from section to section. They saw us collecting bivalves and would gather them from all over and bring us handfuls of them, which we accepted graciously and discretely disposed of.
Neil was getting frustrated by the presence of so many kids and Al distracted them by playing games with them as we moved on. Soon we were down to the usual four boys which Al returned with. We finished low resolution sampling of everything that was in the scope of our project and quit early. We got pictures with the local boys and gave them more treats. We stopped in a little town for lunch, and when we got back to the hotel I helped with coral taphonomy again.
At supper that night the fleas were really bad and everyone at our end of the table got bit. When we were done eating we gave most of our remaining lunch foods to the boys that wait around for our supper leftovers.
Because it was our last night here Kelsey (girl), Sarah, and I went for a walk around town after supper. Though everyone we encountered was friendly and polite I was not entirely at ease walking through the dark neighbourhoods at night. |
