Day 12: Friday, June 17, 2005 September 21, 2005
We all got up early to go for an amazing spread of food in the breakfast area. Shortly thereafter we went snorkelling in the shallow waters near the hotel. Diversity was low, as to be expected from human activity, but there was still a lot to be seen. We found crabs, shrimp, echinoids like starfish and sea urchins, jellyfish, sea grass and several varieties of coral, fish and algae. It was a very worthwhile experience to see a modern reef environment and having Lisa describe the roles that these organisms play in a reef system.
After a lunch of pizza at the snack bar on the beach Fina, Sarah, Whitney, and I went shopping. Outside the resort there are a variety of shady characters offering various commodities and services. After seeing the cheesy and expensive wares for sale and being offered drugs and prostitutes I had enough of shopping and I went back to the beach to do more swimming. The beach was much busier today and I spent more time hanging out with group members than swimming during the day.
For supper we went to the Mexican restaurant, but several people were feeling ill from too much sun and dehydration, so not everyone ate that night. It was a good meal, but a little bland, certainly not as good as the Italian restaurant.
After supper those of us that were up for it went for a late night swim and enjoyed the last few hours we would have in the Caribbean. |
