Social Sciences and Humanities:
Helping re-imagine universities in the Digital Age

Chad Gaffield

PhD, FRSC, President
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

Universities are among the few institutions that can trace their history to the Middle Ages. One key reason is their ability to adapt to changing internal and external forces.

This ability is being tested by new insights into teaching, advancing knowledge and understanding, and new relationships with society. These are enabled and accelerated by digital technologies, content and literacies. Judging by public discussion world-wide, the result is both promising and worrisome, both inspiring and threatening.

This lecture will describe profound changes underway on Canadian campuses and suggest how innovative approaches in the social sciences and humanities hold promise for successful re-imagining of universities in the Digital Age.
