NSERC

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is the national instrument for making strategic investments in Canada's capability in science and technology. NSERC supports both basic university research through discovery grants and project research through partnerships among universities, governments and the private sector, as well as the advanced training of highly qualified people.

In 2005-2006, NSERC will support over 8,700 researchers by investing $865 million in university-based research and training in all the natural sciences and engineering.

SSHRC

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is the federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the humanities and social sciences. SSHRC has identified three main goals:

  1. To enhance the quality of, and support for, research and research training in the social sciences and humanities;
  2. To enable connections among disciplines, including those in engineering and the natural and health sciences, as well as between the research community and the larger community, in Canada and in the rest of the world;
  3. To increase the impact of research and research training for the benefit of society.
