NSERC John C. Polanyi Award
Nomination Due: March 1, 2012
About the John C. Polanyi Award 

This award recognizes and supports a university researcher, or team of researchers, whose work has led to a recent outstanding Canadian advance in any field of the natural sciences or engineering. The nominee's or team's work must demonstrate a high degree of significance, novelty and impact on the research community and Canadian society.

 Value: The winning individual or team will receive a research grant of $250,000

YWCA (Saskatoon) Women of Distinction Awards
Nominations Due: March 1, 2012
About the YWCA (Saskatoon) Women of Distinction Awards 

The Saskatoon YWCA recognizes women who have distinguished themselves as leaders, mentors, facilitators, communicators, supporters, or listeners, and who have enriched the Saskatoon community or the world beyond Saskatoon as a result of their unique contributions. Awards are presented in ten categories: Arts, Culture and/or Heritage; Athletics; Community Building; Education; Entrepreneurship; Health and Wellness; Science, Technology, or Research; Leadership and Management; Youth; and Lifetime Achievement.

Value: Nominees and winners are recognized at the annual Women of Distinction dinner in June

SSHRC Gold Medal
Nominations Due March 9, 2012
About the SSHRC Gold Medal 

The SSHRC Gold Medal for Achievement in Research is SSHRC’s highest research honour. It is awarded to an individual whose leadership, dedication, and originality of thought have significantly advanced understanding in his or her field of research, enriched Canadian society, and contributed to the country's cultural and intellectual life. 

Value: The winner receives the Gold Medal and $100,000. The funds can only be used for research, training or other academic activities.

Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) Fellowships
Nomination Due: March 23, 2012
About the CAHS Fellowships

Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) fellowships recognize individuals of great accomplishment and achievement in the academic health sciences in Canada. CAHS works in partnership with the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Engineering to form the three Member Academies of the Council of Canadian Academies. 

Value:  Fellows of the Academy are entitled to use the designation FCAHS (Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences) or MACSS (Membre de l'academie canadienne des sciences de la sante).

Canadian Mathematical Society – Graham Wright Award

About the Graham Wright Award 

The Canadian Mathematical Society’s Graham Wright Award recognizes individuals who have made sustained and significant contributions to the Canadian mathematical community and, in particular, to the Canadian Mathematical Society.   

Value: A gold etched blue glass award is presented at either the recipients' home institution or at a CMS meeting.

NSERC Gerhard Herzberg Gold Medal
Nomination Due: March 1, 2012
About the Herzberg Medal 

The NSERC Herzberg Medal is the highest honour of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. It is awarded annually to an individual who has demonstrated sustained excellence and influence in research, for a body of work conducted in Canada that has substantially advanced the natural sciences or engineering fields. 

Value: In addition to the medal, the winner is guaranteed $1 million to use for his or her own university-based research or to direct in some related way such as the establishment of research scholarships, fellowships or chairs in his or her name in Canadian universities. The monetary award will be distributed over a five-year period.  Two runners-up will receive $50,000, applicable to their university research or to the establishment of research scholarships, fellowships or chairs in their names in Canadian universities.


NSERC Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research
Nomination Due: March 1, 2012
About the Brockhouse Prize 

The Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering recognizes outstanding Canadian teams of researchers from different disciplines who have combined their expertise to produce achievements of outstanding international significance in the natural sciences and engineering in the last six years. 

Value:  Team research grant of $250,000. Individuals received medals and certificates.

NSERC Synergy Award
Nomination Due: April 15, 2011
About the NSERC Synergy Award
Nominations are traditionally due in mid April. The call for nominations has not yet been issued and this date may be subject to change. 

The Synergy Awards for Innovation "celebrate outstanding university-industry R & D partnerships." Administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), they are intended to recognize and reward innovation and superior collaborative research in the natural sciences and engineering. 

Value:  $200,000 research grant to the university; sculpture and NSERC Industrial R&D Fellow to the industry partner (NSERC will bear the cost of the industrial portion of the fellow’s salary).

Medical Council of Canada (MCC) Outstanding Achievement Award
Nomination Due: May 1, 2012
About the MCC Award 

“This prestigious award, presented annually, is unique in that its nominees and recipients come from a broad range of health disciplines, such as dentistry, physical therapy and medical practice. It recognizes a particularly important and vital contribution to health care in Canada and the evaluation of clinical and professional competence in the health professions. These are the people who ensure that our health care professionals meet the high standards that Canadians enjoy and expect." (MCC website) 

Value:  Custom-designed crystal sculpture engraved with provincial and territorial emblems

Killam Research Fellowships

About the Killam Research Fellowship
Nominations are traditionally due in mid May. The call for nominations has not yet been issued and this date may be subject to change. 

Killam Research Fellowships are funded through lifetime and testamentary gifts to the Canada Council from Mrs. Dorothy J. Killam. They provide support to scholars of exceptional ability who are engaged in research projects of broad significance and widespread interest. The awards honour the memory and exceptional achievements of Mrs. Killam’s husband, Izaak Walton Killam. 

Value:  Killam Research Fellowships provide two years of release time from teaching and administrative duties. They are valued at $70,000 per year. The fellowships are awarded to individuals, but the funds are paid to and administered by the institution to fund replacement costs for the fellow. Institutions are required to pay the fellow’s full salary and benefits for the two-year period.

Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science (Franklin Institute)
Nomination Due: May 31, 2012
About the Bower Awards

 International competition from The Franklin Institute for individuals whose work has had a significant impact in a specific scientific field as announced by the Institute each year.  The category for this year’s competition is nanochemistry. (See website for details.)   

Value:  Gold medal and prize of US $250,000

Benjamin Franklin Medals
There is no deadline for submissions. Nominations will be acknowledged promptly, but the case method review process typically requires two years to complete.
About the Benjamin Franklin Medals

The Franklin Institute Awards identify individuals whose great innovation has benefited humanity, advanced science, launched new fields of inquiry, and deepened our understanding of the universe. 

Value:  Laureates of The Franklin Institute are brought to Philadelphia each April for a weeklong celebration of their accomplishments, culminating with a grand awards ceremony and elegant dinner, befitting the honor and distinction of this historic awards program.

NSERC E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowships

About the EWR Steacie Memorial Fellowship
Nominations are traditionally due in early June. The call for nominations has not yet been issued and this date may be subject to change. 

NSERC Steacie Fellowships are awarded to enhance the career development of outstanding and highly promising scientists and engineers who are Canadian university faculty members, and are earning a strong international reputation for original research. Every year, NSERC awards up to six Steacie Fellowships for a two-year period. 

Value: Successful Fellows are relieved of teaching and administrative duties, so that they can devote all their time and energy to research. Fellowships are held at a Canadian university or affiliated research institution. They normally include a contribution to the university in the amount of $90,000 per year toward the Fellow's salary. Fellows are also awarded a $250,000 research grant. See website for details and restrictions.

Killam Prizes

About the Killam Prize
Nominations are traditionally due in mid June. The call for nominations has not yet been issued and this date may be subject to change. 

The Killam Prizes are funded through lifetime and testamentary gifts to the Canada Council from Mrs. Dorothy J. Killam. They provide support to scholars of exceptional ability who are engaged in research projects of broad significance and widespread interest. The awards honour the memory and exceptional achievements of Mrs. Killam’s husband, Izaak Walton Killam.

Value:  Each Killam Prize recipient receives $100,000. Ordinarily, Killam Prizes are not taxable.

Canadian Medical Hall of Fame
Nomination Due: June 25, 2012
About the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame 

The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame is the only national organization dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of Canada's medical and health-sciences heroes. Through educational programs, the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame encourages youth to pursue careers in medicine and the health sciences, fostering future generations of excellence. Inductions into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame are held every 18 months.

Steacie Prize for Natural Sciences
Nomination Due: June 30, 2012
About the Steacie Prize for Natural Sciences 

The Steacie Prize is awarded annually to a young scientist or engineer in Canada and is administered by the trustees of the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fund, a private foundation dedicated to the advancement of science and engineering in Canada.

Value: $15,000. Winners are invited to deliver a lecture about their research work at the Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences in Ottawa.

About the CMS Awards

Coxeter-James Prize

The Coxeter-James Prize Lectureship recognizes young mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to mathematical research. The selected candidate will deliver the prize lecture at the Winter Meeting.

The recipient shall be a member of the Canadian mathematical community. Nominations may be made up to ten years from the candidate's Ph.D: researchers having their PhD degrees conferred in 2001 or later will be eligible for nomination in 2011 for the 2012 Coxeter-James prize. A nomination can be updated and will remain active for a second year unless the original nomination is made in the tenth year from the candidate's Ph.D.

Nominators should ask at least three referees to submit letters directly to the CMS ( cjprize@cms.math.ca) by September 30, 2011. Some arms length referees are strongly encouraged. Nomination letters should list the chosen referees, and should include a recent curriculum vitae for the nominee, if available.

Jeffery-Williams Prize

The Jeffery-Williams Prize Lectureship recognizes mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to mathematical research. The prize lecture will be delivered at the Summer Meeting. The recipient shall be a member of the Canadian mathematical community. A nomination can be updated and will remain active for three years.

Nominators should ask at least three referees to submit letters directly to the CMS ( jwprize@cms.math.ca) by September 30, 2011. Some arms length referees are strongly encouraged. Nomination letters should list the chosen referees, and should include a recent curriculum vitae for the nominee, if available.

Krieger-Nelson Prize

The Krieger-Nelson Prize Lectureship recognizes outstanding research by a female mathematician. The prize lecture will be delivered at the Summer Meeting. The recipient shall be a member of the Canadian mathematical community. A nomination can be updated and will remain active for two years.

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Medals

About the IEEE Medals 

Through its awards program, the IEEE advances the interests of its members by recognizing their contributions in advancing the fields of interest to IEEE to the benefit of society. The IEEE Awards Program honours members and other professionals for their service to society. IEEE Medals are the highest awards in the hierarchy of IEEE recognitions.

Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) Awards

About the CIC Awards

The Chemical Institute of Canada presents a number of awards including: the CIC Medal for an outstanding contribution to the science of chemistry or chemical engineering in Canada; the Catalysis Award; the Montreal Medal for leadership in or outstanding contribution to the profession of chemistry or chemical engineering in Canada; the Environmental Improvement Award for a significant achievement in pollution prevention, treatment or remediation in Canada; the CIC Award for Chemical Education; and the Macromolecular Science and Engineering Award.

Value: Varies by award.

Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) Awards
Nomination Due: July 2, 2012

About the CSC Awards

CSC Awards include: Alcan Award (inorganic chemistry or electrochemistry); Award for Pure or Applied Inorganic Chemistry; Clara Benson Award (distinguished contribution by a woman); Fred Beamish and Maxxam awards (analytical chemistry); Keith Laidler Award (physical chemistry); R.U. Lemieux and Alfred Bader awards (organic chemistry); Bernard Belleau Award (medicinal chemistry); Enantioselective Synthetic Chemistry Research Grants; E.W.R. Steacie Award for Outstanding Contribution to Chemistry while working in Canada; John C. Polyani Award (physical, theoretical or computational chemistry or chemical physics); Merck Frosst Award (organic chemistry or biochemistry) and various awards for young chemistry researchers.

Value: Varies by award. Generally $1000 or more plus scroll. All CSC awards are lecture awards.

Saskatchewan Order of Merit

About the Saskatchewan Order of Merit 

Established in 1985, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit is a prestigious recognition of excellence, achievement and contributions to the social, cultural and economic well-being of the province and its residents. The Order recognizes individuals who have made their mark in such areas as the arts, agriculture, business and industry, community leadership, the occupations or professions, public service, research, and volunteer service. 

Value: Medal/insignia, use of post-nominal S.O.M.

Prix Galien Canada -- Research Category

About the Prix Galien Award
Nominations are traditionally due in late July.  The call for nominations has not yet been issued and this date may be subject to change. 

The Prix Galien Canada, Research Category, recognizes a remarkable contribution made by a researcher or research team to the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. 

Value: Gold medal and framed certificate.

3M Teaching Fellowships
Nomination Due: August 31, 2012
About the 3M Teaching Fellowships
Nominations are traditionally due in late August.  The call for nominations has not yet been issued and this date may be subject to change. 

These awards recognize teaching excellence as well as educational leadership. The Selection Committee looks for independent evidence of: 1) excellence in teaching over a number of years, principally (but not exclusively) at the undergraduate level; 2) commitment to the improvement of university teaching with particular emphasis on contributions beyond the nominee's discipline or profession to as broad an audience as possible. 

Value: The award includes lifetime membership in the Society, and 3M Fellowship winners will attend an all expense paid 3-day retreat at the Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello to celebrate others' exceptional achievements in teaching and provide an opportunity for outstanding teachers to share experiences and ideas.
