All renewal information will be sent to the tenants usask email account. All renewals will be done online. If you miss the renewal deadline stated in your email you will not be permitted to renew your lease and it will be cancelled. If you want to continue living in Residence you will have to apply as a new student.
Students who are currently living in Voyageur Place and are in good standings with the Residence Office will be allowed to apply as a renewal applicant for the following academic year provided they apply by the deadline stated in their offer for renewal sent to their usask email account.
For the last 15 years there has been an unofficial/unwritten cap placed on the number of returning students we have in Voyageur Place. During that time the unofficial returning student cap was not reached leaving space for both returning and first year students. With the changes to the housing market in 2008, the balance was shifted leaving us with a higher proportion of returning students than was previously experienced. As a result of this we are formalizing the renewal process to ensure there is adequate space made available for first year students.
The University of Saskatchewan Integrated plan places a huge emphasis on recruitment and retention of students. Many studies show that student’s who live in residence (especially in their first year) have a higher success rate and GPA. With an increase in out of province and international recruitment there is also increased pressure to provide accommodation for first year students. The university recognizes that there is a shortage of affordable student housing in close proximity to campus and is actively working on refining the housing funding submission to the government for new residence buildings. Our hope is that this will result in new housing in the not so distant future.
As it now stands VP has many of the support services necessary for first year success – an active student life program complete with RA’s, tutors, Faculty in Residence, and an active student association to name a few. This together with location lends itself well to focusing our student life initiatives for first year students in Voyageur Place.
In the process of finding a fair way to implement the cap of 130 returning spaces we consulted with the ARC, CRB and RA’s. There were many suggestions and the overall themes that came through from all groups was a lottery selection process as follows:
Each student that reapplies and is eligible to return (passed financial and discipline screening process) will be assigned a number. The numbers will be placed in a hat and drawn. All successful candidates (had their number selected in the draw) from the first draw will be sent an offer. Students who don’t respond by the deadline stated in the email letter of offer will have their applications cancelled. A subsequent draw will take place and this process will be repeated until the 130 places allocated for returning students are filled.
Students who are currently living in Seager Wheeler and are in good standings with the Residence Office will be allowed to apply as a renewal applicant provided they apply by the deadline stated in their offer for renewal sent to their usask email account.
Renewal applicants are given first consideration. If you miss the deadline to renew and still want to apply you will be treated like a new Seager Wheeler Fall/Winter applicant and would apply as a new applicant where applications are accepted on a first come first serve basis.
Students who want accommodations apply as a New Applicant. We accept new applications on a continual basis during the Spring/Summer months.
We encourage all:
Note: Anyone in the above groups applying after the specified deadlines will lose their right to first consideration and will go on the regular waiting list.
ALL other students: We accept new applications on a continual basis. Apply early to avoid disappointment and remember you do not need to have confirmation of acceptance by the University of Saskatchewan or have a student number at the time you apply for accommodations. Please update your profile (online) with that information once you receive it.
New Applications are accepted on a continual basis, apply early to avoid disappointment.
