Residence provides you with an opportunity to meet people from all corners of the world; develop new friendships and learn valuable life skills. When people are part of a community, individual rights must be acknowledged and respected. Harassment or discrimination with respect to any resident by reason of ancestry, race, creed, color, national origin, political or religious affiliation or belief, sex, sexual orientation, physical ability, or age will not be tolerated.
In order to enhance your Residence life experience, we have a variety of exclusive services available to you.
1. Residence Assistants (RA) (Voyageur Place and Seager Wheeler Hall)
RAs are upper year resident students hired by the residence department to assist rez students. They are likely to be one of the first people you will meet when you move in. RAs are there to help students with roommate issues, school stress, lockouts, homesickness, and adjustment issues. In addition to having a "home" floor, RAs are "on call" on a rotational basis and do regular rounds throughout Residence. In addition to supporting students they also coordinate a wide variety of activities ranging from fun to educational. For example, this past year the RAs coordinated a Bachelor Auction for charity Comic Book Club, Rezzie Runners, Rez 101, and an International Banquet.
2. Faculty in Rez (FIR) (Voyageur Place)
Students living in Voyageur Place have the added bonus of having a faculty member living in residence. The current FIR assists Voyageur Place students with academic issues. He/she holds scheduled office hours and is accessible via telephone or email. In addition the FIR organizes discussion groups, educational workshops, documentary movie nights, and invited speakers’ presentations.
3. The Academic Mentorship Program (AMP) (Voyageur Place)
This program is available to students living in Voyageur Place free of charge. The AMP is here to help you with academic issues such as admission to professional programs, to find summer research job placements, and to locate learning resources on campus. They also offer mentoring in Mathematics, Physics, English, Biology, Chemistry and other subjects.
4. Community Review Board (CRB) (Voyageur Place)
Voyageur Place has established a peer judicial system whereby students breaking community standards (e.g. excessive noise during quiet hours) go before a board of their peers to present their case. If they are found guilty they will be issued a sanction which could involve community service, a fine, or any other punishment the board deems reasonable.
5. Residence Life Coordinators (RLC) (Voyageur Place and Seager Wheeler Hall)
The Residence Life Coordinator, in conjunction with other student life staff, is responsible for creating a caring, student-focused, residential environment that supports a balance between academic success and the broader student life experience. They are professional residence life staff members who live amongst the student body in Residence. They have office hours that meet the needs of students and are available to address any of your concerns.
6. Residents' Association (Voyageur Place)
As a resident of Voyageur Place you have the opportunity to be a member of the student run residents' association called the Associated Residence Committee (ARC). The ARC coordinates a wide range of activities such as sporting activities, dances, movie nights, and various trips. Participation in these events is on a volunteer basis but they provide a great way for you to make friends and have a great time!
7. Student Programming Coordinators (SPC) (Seager Wheeler Hall)
Two student leaders are chosen to coordinate fun inclusive events for the residents of Seager Wheeler. Past events have included weekly movie nights, paintball, intramural sports, grocery shopping buses, garage sale, and study sessions. The SPCs are always looking for suggestions and volunteers – so feel free to bring your ideas to them!
