Kunio Komiyama

The flag is lowered to honor the memory of Dr. Kunio Komiyama, Professor Emeritus, College of Dentistry.

It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Kunio Komiyama which occurred at Royal University Hospital on Monday, September 26.   Kunio received his DDS from Osaka Dental College in 1966 and went on to complete his PHD in Oral Microbiology and Immunology 1970.  On April 1, 1974  he joined the University of Saskatchewan, College of Dentistry where he remained a presence for over 40 years.  He was granted Professor Emeritus status at the U of S upon his retirement in 2006, but continued teach courses until recently.

At the College, Kunio taught Oral Microbiology, as well as Immunology and Physiology and Infection Control to dental students, and for a brief period of time also did some teaching in Endodontics.  Kunio was noted for his contribution to developing a “solar-powered” toothbrush.  He coordinated a course for 4th year in which he had numerous faculty from the College of Medicine give interesting and informative lectures to enhance multidisciplinary teaching.  Kunio was always interested in his students and loved hearing of and talking about their professional and personal accomplishments.  Students appreciated his kindness and interest in their lives and pending careers.  He enjoyed playing softball with the Dentistry summer softball team, and socializing with the students, faculty and friends. He loved baseball, and was one of the Blue Jays’ first and most dedicated fans.  He was a dog lover, arriving in Saskatoon in 1974 with two large German Shepherds (“Winnie” and “Mannie” - named after “Winnipeg” and “Manitoba”).  Later in life, he “downsized” to smaller dogs, and more recently a cat.

Kunio  remained a constant ambassador and advocate for the College and the University till the day he passed, one of the most recognizable faces associated with the College of  Dentistry.  A kind, gentle and considerate human being, generous to a fault, his positive attitude and ever present full face and eyes grin will remain indelible for all who knew him. Simultaneously complicated and simple,  confusing and clear, flawed and perfect, Kunio dedicated  his life to the people and the program he loved.  In addition to his grin, his laughter will echo throughout the halls of the Health Sciences and Dental Clinic buildings for years to come.

At Kunio’s request  no formal funeral service will be held; however in honor of the many contributions he has made to the College, University,  and to many of our lives, a memorial service “come and go tea” has been arranged.  Details are as follows:

Date: Wednesday, October 12th
Time: 3:30 – 6:00 p.m.
Location: Fireplace Room, University Club
