Welcome to the website for the School of Environment and Sustainability (SENS), an interdisciplinary graduate school created to address pressing issues that concern each of us, including water quality, environmental governance, and climate change. SENS was founded in 2007 with goals of becoming a leader in environmental research, and of contributing to the training and education of a new generation of environmental managers and sustainability champions.
At SENS, students collaborate with faculty from a variety of academic backgrounds, including hydrology, economics, law, aboriginal knowledge, geography, biology, engineering, toxicology, and education, to address complex, interdisciplinary issues in environment and sustainability. Our students become critical thinkers capable of confronting complex challenges of environmental change and sustainability. They are challenged to think outside traditional disciplinary boundaries and employ a variety of tools and resources to address emerging issues.
We offer three graduate program options – a professional course-based Master of Sustainable Environmental Management (MSEM), and thesis-based master and doctoral programs in Environment and Sustainability (MES, PhD). Each of our core courses is team taught by two or more faculty who work together to prepare the course content and ensure that the courses are truly interdisciplinary. Continually striving for innovation, SENS is now offering a condensed, 4-week course format for the 2012 winter semester. These condensed courses allow students to take advantage of study abroad opportunities with our partner universities and provides for in-depth concentration and study of one area at a time. In addition, students may choose from a range of outstanding faculty to supervise, teach, and mentor them. Our faculty are recognized leaders and innovators in their respective fields and place high value on collaboration, learning and interdisciplinary research.
SENS continually strives to forge partnerships both inside and outside of the university. The school is a member of the Saskatchewan Environmental Industry and Managers' Association (SEIMA), and has established working relationships with ECO Canada and the City of Saskatoon. In October 2010, SENS established a partnership with Saskatoon Public Schools with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and a pledge to work together on community projects that focus on sustainability. Collaborations to date include Aden Bowman’s 2010 Youth Sustainability Conference, participation in the Kinsmen Park redesign consultation process, and the development of educational brochures for the City of Saskatoon Green Energy Park. The school also has a strong base of support staff dedicated to providing a quality experience for students and faculty.
I hope you will find this website informative, interesting and reflective of our programs. If you have questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us at sens.info@usask.ca or (306) 966-1985.
Sincerely,
Maureen
