Funds raised for Clinica Esperanza in Honduras

Jan 22, 2010
Recently, Dr. Robert Buckingham, Executive Director of the School of Public Health gave an interesting information session entitled "Global Health: Opportunities in Honduras, Thailand, Bali and India." We are pleased to announce that $500 was raised for Clinica Esperanza in Honduras through the concerted efforts made and great volunteer work performed by the Public Health Interest Group (PHIG) and the School of Public Health Student Association (SPHSA). Congratulations to all for their contribution to a worthy cause, and a big thank you to all those who paid the one dollar entrance fee and who made additional donations at the door.

Information on Clinica Esperanza

When Peggy Stranges, a registered nurse, began seeing patients in her kitchen in 2002, the need for a clinic in Sandy Bay, Honduras quickly became apparent. In 2004, donated land became the future home of Clinica Esperanza (the clinic of hope). In 2007, phase one of Clinica Esperanza, including a waiting room, reception office, laboratory, four treatment rooms and a pharmacy, was completed. Donated materials and volunteer labour made this initiative possible, and the clinic now sees over 75 patients per day. No one is turned away if they are unable to pay. Phase two and three will include more specialized services, including a birthing centre, pediatric inpatient unit, surgery centre and radiology unit. Work is underway on phase two, and phase three is slated to begin in 2011.

Clinica Esperanza relies on the generosity of others through their volunteer time and financial donations. To learn more, visit http://www.clinicaesperanza.com/.
