The School of Public Health would like to congratulate the following students on being selected as Nexen Scholarship recipients.

The Nexen Scholarships are used to provide financial support, of up to $5,000/each, to incoming students enrolled in the school's flagship Master of Public Health (MPH) program.

Chatha"A student is rewarded in many ways for the work they do. They gain knowledge to progress further, strive harder and lead a meaningful life. Another reward is good grades; this brings them a sense of achievement. The tip of the pyramid of success is to be awarded a scholarship. All students gain knowledge (some less some more), many get good grades, but few receive scholarships. It's the pinnacle of achievement. But with it comes responsibility. Responsibilities to work harder, keep up the pace, and maintain the standards. Another aspect is recognizing the efforts of those who recognize you. It is my sincere desire to be able to come up to the expectations of my honourable teachers and do my best to keep the faith they have entrusted on me. May God help me in my efforts." Ijaz Ahmad Chatha, MPH student

Danso"As one of the recipients of the NEXEN Scholarship in public health, I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for both the award and the opportunity to pursue graduate studies at the University of Saskatchewan. I recognize that with the financial freedom this scholarship offers, there comes an enormous responsibility for me to excel in my academic endeavours," says  Maclean Danso, MPH student. "My overall educational goal is to become a leader, university teacher and researcher in the field of public health. I hope to make significant impact on the world around me by educating people about how to manage factors they can control which impact their health." Maclean also credits his success to the friendly atmosphere at the university and in the city of Saskatoon; the structure of the MPH program and the flexibility it provides to students; and the dedication and commitment of the school's faculty in helping students succeed in their studies.

Falconer "I am greatly appreciative of the Nexen Scholarship for it helps to maintain my motivation and goal for excellence in my education. Finances can often be a major burden during post-secondary education; however, this scholarship helps toward paying for my tuition and allows me to further my education. My experiences with the MPH program thus far have been positive.  I have enjoyed studying various population health topics, meeting my fellow students who come from many different corners of the world, and working with the tremendous faculty members; after only one month in the program I feel as though I am part of the School of Public Health family," says Jacey Falconer, MPH student. "My future career goal entails working in the field of epidemiology and infectious diseases in the community setting."

Grant"The MPH program is becoming more challenging, as each day there is something more to learn and the professors in the program have diverse experience to share thus making SPH the best place to be," says Eisha Grant, MPH student. "The Nexen award has given me a great opportunity to be part of the program, to concentrate in my studies and become a public health expert in the future."

Burgos"First of all I would like to thank NEXEN and the School of Public Health (SPH) for this award. This scholarship is meaningful for it recognizes the effort and dedication I have put in my studies. The fact of being a Latin American woman has made possible for me to be closely in touch with the difficulties associated with a developing country therefore, this perspective can strengthen my contributions to the School, as well as my peer understanding of these and other issues. Nevertheless, it has not been easy for me to have an international experience that can enrich my education and knowledge about other countries' experiences and methodologies. Thus, being now part of the MPH programme means an incomparable opportunity for contributing to improve and complement my understanding in these matters and consequently play a role in Colombian welfare improvement as a future teacher and researcher supporting policy and decision makers; thanks to NEXEN and the SPH all of this will be possible." Lina M. Burgos Liz, MPH student

Lockhart"Choosing the U of S for my MPH was the best decision I could have made. There are so many faculty here, no matter what my interests end up being, I will have some very knowledgeable people to learn from. Currently, I am very interested in understanding the methods of chronic disease epidemiology and am hoping to base my upcoming practicum around that. I am extremely grateful for the Nexen Scholarship as it has given me the flexibility to take a lower paying practicum - as would be the case with an organization like the WHO - in order to advance my career goals and get to where I want to be", says Stuart Lockhart, MPH student.

Through Nexen Inc's generous contributions, our graduate student are one step closer to fulfilling the school's mission of improving the health of individuals in our regional, national and global communities; creating, disseminating and applying public health knowledge in critical areas of need; and recruiting and educating high calibre students to become the next generation of promising and visionary public health leaders.
