The School of Public Health would like to congratulate the following students on being selected as SPH Scholarship recipients.

"The scholarship from the school of public health is of tremendous benefit to my academic pursuit as it allows me to focus more on other essential things relating to my studies. The scholarship acts as a bridge in bringing me to close proximity to one of my life goals of developing holistic approach to preventing diseases and illnesses, reducing morbidity and mortality and improving the quality of life in the population," said Bolaji Adeniji (Daniel), MPH student. "My experiences to date with the MPH program have been memorable and unforgettable. The MPH class of 2012 is diverse in its population size and structure, and this has made it possible for me to connect with other students with like passions of making the world a habitable place. It is my strongest belief that at the end of my MPH, I will have developed all the competencies essential to the practice of public health both locally and globally. The school of public health, University of Saskatchewan, has in place several opportunities and programs to help students like myself develop their innate skills and put their potentials into great use to better the lives of all and sundry."
"I am very thankful to receive the SPH scholarship this year. I accept this scholarship with an understanding of the effort and commitment I will now have to represent the department. I look forward to the challenge academically as well as the numerous volunteer and work opportunities," said Samual Caldbick, MPH student. "As I am discovering which route I am interested in pursuing within the field, I am determined to succeed regardless of where that takes me. I have very large goals for myself and will take the appropriate measures to ensure I achieve them. I hope to make an impact at a community level with epidemiology or a larger population impact through health policy."
"A
s a recipient of the MPH scholarship at the University of Saskatchewan, I feel extremely blessed. It is an honour and privilege to be amongst students with diverse academic backgrounds from all across the world. In talking to previous graduates and faculty members, I have been able to see how interconnected our society is. Every day, the MPH program challenges my way of thinking and teaches me how we can make positive changes. I enjoy the interdisciplinary nature of public health and its belief in achieving equality. I believe that public health is the right field for me, and in the future I hope to work at a local, community level. In public health, ordinary citizens and community members have the capacity to change their circumstances." Jethro Cheng, MPH student
"As a recipient of an SPH scholarship, I feel deeply appreciative to those who selected me for this privilege. I am very thankful for this opportunity as it allows me to truly focus on my
studies and immerse myself in the MPH program without the burden of financial difficulty. My experiences with the program to date have been challenging yet valuable. I now realize the full scope of public health and the importance that it has in our society. It is an exciting field to be entering into and I am very pleased that this is the path that I have taken. My current interests lie in the areas of health promotion and health program planning, but as I pursue this degree, these ideas may evolve. I look forward to delving into a career in public health and would like to thank the School of Public Health in assisting me to do so." Heather Davis, MPH student
"Receiving the School of Public Health scholarship is an honor. It provides myself and the other recipients the opportunity to achieve our academic goals and dreams. Given this opportunity, we will be able to contribute in an informed and pragmatic way to contemporary public health challenges," said Karen Pykerman, MPH student. "Epidemiology is where I would like to focus my public health studies. The academic opportunities that have been offered by the School of Public Health program so early in my graduate education make me excited and proud to be part of such a growing and recognized School of Public Health."
"When I was first entering into the headquarter of Canadian Medical Association in Ottawa, where I had my employment from 2007 to 2009, I saw a big drape hanging on one side of the foyer, saying that "CANADA needs MORE doctors". Is that true? Yes, having more doctors and hospitals can be a very straightforward solution to this problem. However, will doctors be able to answer the following questions?: How to run a health system effectively and efficiently? How to set up a health system to reduce the medical disparity? How to promote the overall health at the public level by using only the existing recourses? Having a master degree in Economics and another one in Statistics, I found my personal interest to be always in the public and social areas. Studying public health and working in that way then automatically became my next move to my goal," said Xiaojing Wu, MPH student. "Having visited the University of Saskatchewan quite bit before I studied here, I have to admit that its campus could be one of the most beautiful in North America. The generous offer provided by the School of Public Health is another reason for me to choose studying in usask. After couple of month studying, what impressed me most is the diversity of the MPH program-- the diversity of educational, cultural and national background. I saw people from all areas and from all over the world. The close and dynamic link between the School of Public Health and many health institutions all over the world is absolutely another privilege the school can provide to its students. I feel very lucky because I made a right decision to choose to study here!"

"I was very pleased to receive a scholarship to help cover my tuition and expenses for my second year in the MPH program. In the course of the program I have taken several excellent classes and learned an incredible amount about the diverse field of public health. Additionally, I have enjoyed interacting with the students and faculty members in the program, and especially appreciate the wide range of backgrounds and experiences that characterize both the student body and faculty of the SPH," said Molly Bell, MPH student. "I am concentrating in epidemiology and hope to go on and complete a PhD with a focus on infectious diseases. I know that what I have learned during the MPH program will provide me with a strong foundation for my future endeavours in public health."
"I am extremely grateful and appreciative to be selected for the SPH scholarship award. Receiving this award represents the School of Public Health's recognition of my work and participation throughout my first year as a Masters of Public Health (MPH) student. As an MPH student I have been fortunate enough to work and take part in various activities and committees including: School of Public Health Student Association (SPHSA) and Public Health Interest Group (PHIG). As a future public health practitioner, I aspire to positively impact vulnerable populations in either a clinical or administrative setting," said Genevieve Braganza, MPH student.
"The tuition scholarship awarded by the School of Public Health has provided me with the opportunity to designate my own funds to participation in the APHA conference this year. Without the scholarship, I likely wouldn't have been able to attend the conference in Denver. I'm looking forward to learning more about the discipline of public health and networking with other professionals who are currently working in the field," said Faye Burgess, MPH student.
"I am delighted to be a recipient of the SPH scholarship 2010/2011, as it is an indication that the SPH values the contributions of students, academic and otherwise, to the success of the school. To date, the experiences I garnered at the SPH could only have been possible through the interests shown by faculty members in the professional development of individual students; you would be hard-pressed to find this commitment from faculty elsewhere. The practicum component of the course is invaluable as it offers the opportunity to have a firsthand experience of public health practice in your area of interest before graduation. I look forward to getting out there to share the competencies and skills I have gained. To prospective students, come enjoy the SPH experience at the U of S," said Opeyemi Fadahunsi, MPH student.
"I am honoured to be a recipient of your Scholarship. Scholarship donors are caring, supportive, and extremely generous individuals who bring students closer to fulfilling their dreams. My dream is to one day, be a part of a global team effort designed to eradicate human suffering from disease, malnutrition and poverty. The endless career possibilities in this ever-growing fast paced field are sensational and I am lucky to have seen this first hand at both the American and Canadian Public Health conferences this past year," said Saghar Kari, MPH student."The Master's of Public Health program at the University of Saskatchewan has enabled me to take part in a broad spectrum of unique and memorable experiences. My first year was marked with numerous extracurricular activities that added depth to my education and truly enriched my public health experience. As the Co-President of the Public Health Interest Group (PHIG), I have been able to take on an active role by getting students from various disciplines involved in implementing health education campaigns on campus. These projects have helped advance knowledge, awareness and ultimately advocated for the betterment of health among the students, staff and faculty members. I personally feel that this past school year was marked by many successes and thanks to your generous scholarship lightening my financial burden; I feel incredibly inspired and motivated to continue achieving academic excellence and continue playing an active role in student run initiatives that generously give back to the community."
"It is my honor to be one of the scholarship recipients. Although this is a great financial assistance, carrying the credit of a scholarship recipient is precious by its own and I would like to thank all the faculty members and staff in the School of Public Health of the University of Saskatchewan for their kindly consideration. Also, I would like to thank all the funders for their generosity," said Masoud Khoddami, MPH student. "The MPH program provided me a great inspiration to continue my future career as a health practitioner here in Canada or other part of the globe. Currently, as a MPH student I feel confident and highly motivated to continue achieving academic excellence during this academic year."
"I am really grateful for the continuing students scholarship from the School of Public Health. My first year in the program was a wonderful learning experience and I truly was able to see how much the faculty and staff care about the students. As the President of the School of Public Health Students' Association I am thrilled the School of Public Health is so student oriented. The Master of Public Health program has further enhanced my knowledge base and practical skills in public health. I am looking forward to applying my new knowledge in the work setting when I graduate," said Megan McCreary, MPH student.
"I am very thankful for the scholarship funds provided through the School of Public Health. When considering applying to the MPH program, I was initially concerned about the lack of funding available to students in professional masters programs," said Christine McDougall, MPH student. "It is good to see that the school has been creative in finding alternative ways to support their students throughout the program. This scholarship will assist me in meeting my goal to finish the MPH program in 16 months through the accelerated option."
"The School of Public Health scholarship award to me means, 'well done on your academic performances and we appreciate your involvement in helping the School grow so far'. As I head into my second year of the MPH program, I would summarize my experiences to date as quite rewarding. With the words of John F. Kennedy which says, 'to whom much is given, much is required', the scholarship also acts as a challenge for me to get better in whatever I do," said Fidel Obu, MPH student. "With a degree from the School of Public Health at the U of S, the future is nothing less than bright. I aspire to become an epidemiologist and will love to be mostly involved with global health organizations that help reduce the burden of diseases worldwide - especially in low and middle income countries."
