The College of Emmanuel & St. Chad

We need your input! Click here for the feedback form on the future direction of the College.

September 26 , 2013 (updated from May 22, 2013)

Dear Friends and Supporters:

Since its announcement last June regarding the future of the College of Emmanuel & St. Chad, the Council of the College has been working closely with its partners in the Saskatoon Theological Union (STU), St. Andrew’s College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary (LTS), to find ways to meet the College’s existing commitments to its current students and its STU partners, and to determine the future course of the College.

Your Council has been encouraged by the commitment of our STU partners to help us solve the problems we face.  We have also been encouraged by continuing financial commitments from funders.

As a result, your Council has decided that the College will continue to operate next year by sharing overhead and resources with St. Andrew’s College and with LTS.  Under this arrangement, Emmanuel & St. Chad students will continue to have access to all STU classes and libraries.  Our extensive library will be housed in the St. Andrew’s library space and we will continue our existing commitments to maintain library services.  We will continue to provide a full-time professor for the teaching of New Testament courses.  We will provide sessional teachers, as needed, to deliver the Anglican studies curriculum.

As a result of these operating changes and consolidation of resources, Council believes that it will be able to reduce operating costs substantially while responsibly meeting its existing commitments.

The question remains: where do we go from here? We are about to embark on a process that we hope will provide an answer to that question.  And we want that process to involve you.

The challenge of the College is to increase the number of students that it teaches. The University of Emmanuel College, by virtue of its Parliamentary charter of 1883 has the authority to grant degrees in all faculties, including theology.  While serving as the Anglican theological college on the prairies is an important part of our mission, it is not enough to sustain the college financially in the long term.  Your Council believes that it will be important to reach students who are not seeking degrees in theology but wish to benefit from the teaching of foundational subjects.

And so we look to you.  We invite you to join the dialogue about the future of the College of Emmanuel & St. Chad.

In the coming weeks and months we will be engaged in a process of reflection and renewal.  This project is being directed by The Rev. Prof. Reg Wickett, former President of the College Council and a senior member of the Anglican Community whose profession is education. Details of this Review Process may be viewed here.

In the meantime, we would ask you to continue your prayerful support for the College.   With your prayers, your financial help, and your ideas, we are confident that the College will find its way to the future, and that its students will continue to find theirs.

Yours in Christ,

Bishop Jim Njegovan

President of the College Council

Emmanuel College was founded at Prince Albert in 1879. An Act of the Dominion Parliament established and incorporated the college as "The University of Saskatchewan" in 1883. When the provincial government established its own university in Saskatoon in 1909, Emmanuel College moved to that city and, while retaining its university status, relinquished its charter title to the new university taking as its new name, The University of Emmanuel College.

St. Chad's College was established in Regina in 1907, where it continued its work until 1964, the year it amalgamated with Emmanuel College. Together they formed the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad, continuing as an affiliate college of the University of Saskatchewan.

The Provincial Synod of May 1967 formally recognized the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad as the official accredited Theological College for the Ecclesiastical Province of Rupert's Land. The student body includes postulants from the dioceses of this Province and various other provinces of the Anglican Communion.
