About the College
Established by the General Assembly in 1912, St. Andrew's was incorporated in 1913 as the Presbyterian Theological College, Saskatoon, and authorized to confer degrees in Divinity.
Situated at the forefront of the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon, the first building was erected in 1922 and in 1924 its name was changed to St. Andrew's College. On June 10, 1925, it passed into The United Church of Canada. It is now one of eleven theological education colleges, schools or programs serving the United Church of Canada.
The College primarily serves the people of the United Church's Conferences of Alberta and Northwest, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.
The College offers theological education and training to candidates for ministry, lay people interested in theological studies, and people in ministry seeking additional education. In all of its educational programs, the College recognizes that students come with diverse backgrounds and resources to offer to the study of Christian faith and, thus, employs methods of education that draw on the prior experience of adult learners.
Students and faculty at St. Andrew's also have a close working relationship with the Anglican College of Emmanuel and St. Chad and the Lutheran Theological Seminary. Together we form the Saskatoon Theological Union.
Throughout its history, St. Andrew's has taken seriously its prairie context. It emphasizes the study of scripture, theology, history, ethics, education, and pastoral care, but always with careful attention to the significance of the Gospel for the cultural, economic, and political realities facing the people of the prairies.
The College Community - students, faculty and staff
This commitment is a central component of the College's M.Div. program. Students in this program undertake a 16 month internship which combines half-time internship with half-time study. During this time, students gain experience in the practice of ministry and reflect on that experience with their supervisors and College faculty. As part of the internship, students work to identify and meet learning objectives needed for ordained ministry.
In addition to its cooperation with other theological colleges through the Saskatoon Theological Union, St. Andrew's is an affiliated college of the University of Saskatchewan. As a result, students at St. Andrew's can undertake their studies in a small learning community (of about 50 to 60 students) while still having access to the wider teaching, library, and recreational resources provided by the University and other colleges. St. Andrew's College is accredited through The Commission on Accrediting of ATS. Accreditation is governed by standards adopted by the member schools of the Commission. These standards cover a broad range of institutional issues and require the approval of degree programs offered by member schools.
