Lounge Renewal

Campus Community Centre

For more than 50 years the Campus Community Centre is at the heart of campus life at St. Andrew’s College, serving as a place to celebrate, to learn, to discuss and to debate.

The centre – more popularly known as the Main Lounge -- continues to serve as the defining space in St. Andrew’s College. It is a classroom for our larger classes, a daily student gathering place and lounge, and the site of most of our community events throughout the year. The room is again serving more of its original purpose as a student and community gathering place for the campus, for University of Saskatchewan seminars, conferences and planning meetings along with the happy occasions of wedding receptions, family gatherings and other celebrations.

To ensure that the centre will continue to serve the college and the University of Saskatchewan for the next 50 years the college has undertaken a renewal campaign and are inviting support from the college community

The first and most urgent component of the renewal project is the replacement of the original 1961 windows. The single-pane, metal-frame windows that extend over the two storeys of height in the room no longer seal properly and are the building’s greatest source of energy loss. The commitment to lowering the carbon footprint of the building and to the safety and security of the facility begins with a replacement of these windows at a total estimated replacement cost is $55,000 for 43 windows.

The hope is to combine the window replacement with a further renewal of the entire room including updated and more energy efficient lighting, new flooring, a renovation of the small kitchen and a replacement of the Lounge furniture.
In addition to the necessary facility improvements, the centre’s furnishings are in need of replacement. The upholstered sofas and chairs (reupholstered once), stacking chairs, lunch chairs and tables are the original furnishings of the room and are now in their 55th year of service. The estimate to replace the furnishings with contemporary commercial grade replacements is approximately $40,000, plus 100 new stacking chair and dollies estimated at approximately $12,000.

As an ongoing source of rental income the Main Lounge has become important in to the college’s overall budget and a renewed facility is expected to generate even greater rental utilization.

The campaign to fund the renewal project has received several donations from alumni/ae members including a gift in memory of Jim McMurtry from the McMurtry family. It has also received foundational support including gifts from the Lily Street Foundation in Calgary and the Jackman Foundation in Toronto. A very generous gift of $25,000 from Mr. William (Bill) Shurniak of Limerick/Assiniboia, Sask., has given us the confidence to move forward on the project.

Alumni/ae members are being invited to consider their support to this undertaking with a special gift to the project, whether in general or for an individual component of the project. Cheques may be made out to St. Andrew’s College and designated to “The Alumni/ae Fund.” If you wish to support the project using MasterCard or VISA you may call Melanie Schwanbeck at 1-877-644-8970 or locally at 306-966-8970. Online contributions are accepted through our website home page using the CanadaHelps.org button and designated to the “Alumni/ae Fund.”
