Award for Hebrews

A book co-authored by a St. Andrew’s College professor has received recognition from the Catholic Press Association.

Hebrews, by St. Andrew’s Prof. HyeRan Kim-Cragg along with Mary Ann Beavis, recently received a third place in the scripture, academic studies category of the association 2016 Book Awards.

The book, one of the first volumes in the Wisdom Commentary series published by Liturgical Press, highlights the similarities between Hebrews and the book of Wisdom/Sophia, which share cosmological, ethical, historical, and sapiential themes, revealing that Hebrews is in fact a submerged tradition of Sophia-Wisdom.

The authors also tackle the sacrificial Christology of Hebrews, concluding that in its ancient context, far from symbolizing suffering and abjection, sacrifice was understood as celebratory and relational.

Contributions from Filipina, Jewish, historical and First Nations perspectives bring additional scholarly, cultural, religious, and experiential wisdom to the commentary.

The 58-volume Wisdom Commentary series makes the best of current feminist biblical scholarship available in an accessible format to aid preachers and teachers in their advancement toward God’s vision of dignity, equality, and justice for all.
