What?
"Making Movies in the Digital Age"
Darwyn will present a personal perspective on the development of digital media technology and computer-generated imagery (CGI) over the past 25 years, and how they have changed and are still changing the art and business of motion-picture production. He will discuss other trends such as the growth of the internet and the increasing popularity of 3D films, and how they are both causes and consequences of digital media technology.
Biography
Darwyn Peachey is the Chief Technical Officer of Pixar Canada, a new animation studio which Pixar opened in Vancouver in January, 2010. Born and raised in the Saskatoon area, Darwyn is a proud graduate of the U of S where he received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in computer science. He worked as a member of the department's technical staff for several years before moving to California in 1988 to work for Pixar, where he has been ever since. At Pixar, he has been a software engineer, a vice-president and senior technology manager, and a member of the production crew on several films including Toy Story (1995), Ratatouille (2007), Up (2009), and Toy Story 3 (2010). He was the Supervising Technical Director for the stereographic 3D re-release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 2009.
Darwyn belongs to the Visual Effects Society and the ACM, and has served on technical program committees for SIGGRAPH and other conferences, and on the editorial board of the Journal of Graphics Tools. He is the author of technical papers in computer graphics and other fields, and a co-author of Texturing and Modeling: A Procedural Approach, now in its 3rd edition. Along with several Pixar colleagues, Darwyn received a 1993 Academy Award for RenderMan, a software package used in visual effects and animation.
Darwyn was awarded the Governor-General's gold medal in 1978, was named one of the hundred Alumni of Influence by the university in 2007 and by the college of Arts & Science in 2009, and was inducted into the Innovator's Hall of Fame by the W. Brett Wilson Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence in 2009.

He will discuss trends and concepts around voice and broadband networks with a focus on converged IP wireline and mobile technologies.
