Internal Awards


In addition to standard graduate scholarships and fellowships, the Toxicology Graduate Program and the Toxicology Undergraduate Program provide the following special awards opportunities to full-time students.   Selection of recepients of the awards is made by the Toxicology Awards Committee in April of each year.  The awards are typically presented at the Toxicology Group Annual General Meeting, which is generally held each May. A brief list of the awards and their dollar value is given below, followed by a more in-depth description and recent award winners.

Perkin Elmer Life Science
Toxicology Innovation & Leadership Award

This award is presented annually to a student registered in the Toxicology Graduate Program (TGP) who has shown one or both of the following qualities: (1) innovation in research - provides innovative ideas and uses creative approaches in their thesis research; demonstrates independent thinking, and/or (2) initiative and leadership - actively involved with the Toxicology Graduate Student Association or the Toxicology Program; actively promotes the TGP and acts as an ambassador for the Program; and shows leadership qualities within either the TGP or their research group. The award is o pen to all full-time students enrolled in the interdisciplinary Toxicology Graduate Program working towards their M.Sc. or Ph.D. in toxicology.  A student may receive this award only once. All full-time students registered in the Toxicology Graduate Program are automatically considered for this award.  However, preference may be given to candidates nominated by their supervisor or peers. The value of the award is $500.

The Dr. Chatur Sisodia Graduate Scholarship

The Dr. Chatur Sisodia Graduate Scholarship is presented annually to a full-time graduate student registered in the Toxicology Graduate Program who has completed a minimum of two years of formal course work.  The $500 award recognizes academic excellence in the field of toxicology and is a tribute to Dr. Chatur Sisodia, the first Academic Coordinator for the program.

H.B. Schiefer Graduate Student Travel Award

This award is intended to provide one travel grant of up to $1,000 (or two partial travel grants totaling $1,000) annually to a graduate student(s) in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Toxicology.  Students must be presenting research findings from their University of Saskatchewan toxicology graduate work (in either platform or poster format) at a national or international scientific meeting in order to be eligible for the award.  Selection will be based on a combination of academic standing, research progress and quality, and financial need.

ToxTest® Student Poster Competition Awards

Each year following the Toxicology Group Annual General Meeting, students have an opportunity to present their research findings in poster format and offer a five minute oral presentation on the material provided in their poster.  Awards of $300 (first place), $200 (second place), and $100 (third place) are offered to students working towards an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in toxicology.  Judging is focussed primarily on the quality of research material provided, the physical nature and overall appearance of the poster, and the clarity and conciseness of the oral presentation.

AREVA Award for Academic Excellence in Toxicology

This award is given each year to the student graduating from the Toxicology Undergraduate Program with the highest grade point average in their core toxicology program courses. The award is in the amount of $500.

The 2008 winner of the AREVA Award for Academic Excellence in Toxicology was Alison Anton.

VWR Toxicology Undergraduate Research Award

The VWR Toxicology Undergraduate Research Award is presented each year to the student who produces the best paper based on their research TOX 480.3 or TOX 481.6,  The award is in the amount of $400.

The recipient of the 2008 VWR Toxicology Undergraduate Research Award was Alison Anton.  Dr. Cheryl Wiramanaden received the award on behalf of Alison Anton.  Presenting the award Michael Danabassis, VWR Sales Representative.

VWR Toxicology Undergrad Seminar Awards

The VWR Toxicology Undergraduate Seminar Award is presented each year to the top two student presentations in the Toxicology Seminar (TOX 490) course. The award is in the amount of $400 for first place.

The 2009 award of the VWR Toxicology Undergraduate Seminar was Janelle Miller (centre).
