Prof. Giesy Completes a trip to Hong Kong and Mainland China
Prof Giesy has spent 6 weeks in Hong Kong and on the mainland in China working with colleagues and his students there.
His first stop was at the Dept. of Biology and Chemistry at City University of Hong Kong where he is Chair Professor at Large in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. He worked with the faculty, students and post docs on ongoing research projects and preparation of manuscripts.
He then attended the annual symposium of the Area of Excellence program in Marine Chemistry and Toxicology of which he is a co-Principal investigator. He and his students gave a number of papers on the research supported by this grant from the Hong Kong Grants Council:
“The Marine Medaka (Oryzias melastigma): A New Marine Fish Model for Assessing Stress & Pollution”. With: E.X.H. Chen, R. Kong, R.S.S. Wu and D.W.T. Au. To: Joint MMS Workshop on Marine Environmental Research. January 7-10, 2008, Hong Kong, China.
“H295R Cells: An in vitro Tool for Screening Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals & Mixtures.” With: M.B. Murphy, R.M.K. Yu, Y. He, M.H.W. Lam, M. Hecker, T. Gracia, P.K.S. Lam and R.S.S. Wu. To: Joint MMS Workshop on Marine Environmental Research. January 7-10, 2008, Hong Kong, China.
Next he participated in a joint colloquium with the State Key Laboratory in Marine Sciences at Xiamen University . During the meeting he also planned a short course that will be taught in Xiamen in July of 2008.
He traveled to Nanjing where he is Concurrent Professor in Environmental Sciences at Nanjing University . He met with his students and interviewed potential students and post docs to come to Canada . He gave the following lecture:
“Monitoring of Exposure to and Potential Effects of Contaminants in the Environment”. With R.S.S. Wu, D.W.T. Au, A. Chan, P.K.S. Lam and B. Richardson. To: Nanjing University , School of the Environment, Nanjing, China , January 14, 2008.
He then worked with faculty and graduate students on study plans, data analysis and manuscript preparation and development of proposals.
While in Nanjing , he worked with the faculty of the Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries Bureau with whom he is doing a study of metals in fish of the Yangtze River Delta. He presented a lecture on environmental monitoring.
“Monitoring for Novel Compounds in the Environment and Status and Trends of Emerging pollutants”. With R.S.S. Wu, D.W.T. Au, A. Chan, P.K.S. Lam and B. Richardson. To: Freshwater Fishery Research Institute of Jiangsu Province (Nanjing), China, January 15, 2008.
He then met with the staff of the Jiangsu Provincial Environmental Monitoring Agency to present a lecture and assist in is developing biological monitoring networks to determine sources of pollution so that effective measures can be put in place to reduce stresses on the aquatic environment. Currently eutrophication and harmful algae blooms are pressing issues that the government is keen to solve.
“Monitoring and Measuring POPs in the Context of Risk Assessment”. With R.S.S. Wu, D.W.T. Au, A. Chan, P.K.S. Lam and B. Richardson. Provincial Environment Agency , Jiangsu Province (Nanjing), China, January 16, 2008.
He traveled to Beijing where he met with colleagues at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is currently working with this group to design a large multi-year study of the Bohai Bay region (Yellow Sea, between China and Korea ). He and the RCEES team will be doing sample collections next May and then analyzing samples by instrumental and bio-analytical techniques. He presented the following lectures:
“Monitoring of Exposure to and Potential Effects of Contaminants in the Environment”. With R.S.S. Wu, D.W.T. Au, A. Chan, P.K.S. Lam and B. Richardson. To: Chinese Academy of Sciences, Research Center for Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Beijing, China, January 14, 2008.
“Monitoring for Novel Compounds in the Environment and Status and Trends of Emerging pollutants”. With R.S.S. Wu, D.W.T. Au, A. Chan, P.K.S. Lam and B. Richardson. To: Chinese Academy of Sciences, Research Center for Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Beijing, China, January 14, 2008.
Finally, he met with Colleagues at Peiking University where he is doing a number of join research projects. He met with faculty and students and assisted in data analyses and writing manuscripts from the results of joint studies.
He presented the following lecture:
“Monitoring for Novel Compounds in the Environment and Status and Trends of Emerging pollutants”. With R.S.S. Wu, D.W.T. Au, A. Chan, P.K.S. Lam and B. Richardson. To: University of Beijing , Beijing China, January 18, 2008.
