Current and Recent Research Projects

Stroke, a reduction in blood flow to a region of the brain, is a major cause of death and disability in North America. We are studying the potential for pre- and post- ischemic nutritional status (e.g. protein-energy malnutrition) to influence the extent of disability following stroke and the mechanisms by which such effects can be exerted. The effects of nutrients on antioxidant defense during the acute period following stroke and the neuroplastic events of the subsequent recovery period are studied.
