Current and Recent Research Projects

-Lactate affects apoptosis of human vascular endothelial cells

The morbidity and mortality associated with diabetic cardiovascular complications are a significant public health concern. Endothelial dysfunction and the overproduction of a specific set of glucose-byproducts are thought to contribute to these complications.

A detoxification endproduct of one of these glucose byproducts, D-lactate, is also elevated in diabetic patients (typical range 0.2 – 0.5 mM), but research has not examined the contribution of D-lactate to the endothelial dysfunction associated with diabetes. In our study, we hypothesize that D-lactate regulate endothelial cellular apoptosis processes due to restricted energy availability.

We intend to investigate whether and how D-lactate can induce apoptosis in human vascular cells to address the possible mechanism by which hyperglycemia-related products accelerated pathologic changes in diabetic vascular complications.
