Professors

Learning Communities professors participate in the program to the extent that their research interests align with the LC themes and their passion for teaching and learning matches that of their students.

meet your LC professors

What all first-year students should know:

  • The importance of responsibility (e.g. let your prof. know if you have been ill or if you are going on a team trip and will miss class, etc.). Keep us posted.
  • If absent, try to ask others in the group for notes and/or handouts.
  • The importance of asking questions for clarification during class or after. The professor will often assume that students understand a concept or that he/she is speaking clearly unless someone politely asks for clarification or to repeat a point or to discuss points further outside class.
  • The importance of time management. This comes with time, but it is important to set a guide of how much time in a week will be spent attending classes, studying, recreation, commitments to family, job, or team, etc.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for assistance through your PAL peer mentors, counsellors, the University Learning Centre (for writing help, etc.), student help centre, and professor.
  • Often the return of the first graded assignment is disappointing.
  • Remember, it is a big step from high school to university. The key is to get better as the semester progresses as you get more comfortable with the new environment, new classmates, new subject matter, and learn the expectations of your professors.
