Do you have any advice for graduate students who are writing their thesis proposals?
Talk to people. Look at what other people have done. Get advice, and then just start. You know, if you just think about it, you can just sit there in your own little world forever, and you've just got to start putting something down on paper. Once the process has started, it goes a lot easier. I think that's the most important thing. I don't think we've ever had a graduate student do whatever they originally proposed verbatim. We always end up taking opportunities along the line or some things don't work out. What's important is that you demonstrate that you can think and that you can write. Both of those things are important. So, it's important to take it very seriously, put a lot of effort into it and show that you're serious about your job, effectively.
