What are the best databases to consult when researching an English paper?

The most commonly-used database in English for English papers is the MLA International Bibliography. Depending on the focus of the research paper, however, there are a lot of other options. The Literature Resource Centre is another. Some people prefer JSTOR or Project Muse. People should be familiar with all of those names, I suppose, but also be aware that usually the starting place for English literature is the MLA database. The best way to tap into this journal literature, which is what a database does, is to use the subject page on the library's homepage. There's a link there to different subject areas and if you go to the English link, you will find a list of appropriate databases in a general sort of way.
