REQUEST FOR DECISION

PRESENTED BY: Bob Lucas, Chair, Academic Programs
Committee

DATE OF MEETING: October 25, 2001

SUBJECT: Changes to the B.Sc. Four-year in Biology and Biotechnology

DECISION REQUESTED:

THE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS THAT COUNCIL APPROVE THE
CHANGES IN THE B.C. FOUR-YEAR PROGRAM IN BIOLOGY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY, AS
DESCRIBED ON THE ATTACHED APPENDIXES.

SUMMARY OF PROPOSAL:

To revise the course requirements for the B.Sc. Four-year degree in
Biology and Biotechnology by reducing the number of required courses in
the upper years of the program and allowing more choice in electives.
See attached listing of course changes.

RATIONAL:

At present, both Honours and Four-year students complete the same program.
These changes will make the program more accessible for students who do
not want an Honours degree.

IMPACT AND RELATIONSHIPS:

The programs of other colleges are not affected by this change.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES REQUIRED: None

COMMITTEE COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATION:

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS COMMITTEE: Approval given. The
committee agreed that the existing program was too restrictive for some
students.

BUDGET COMMITTEE: Approval given. The committee agreed
that this change provided more choices for students without budgetary implications.

PLANNING COMMITTEE: Approval given.
