The Academic Programs Committee is reporting to Council on the approval of two items:

1. Engineering Entrepreneurship program option
The Engineering Entrepreneurship program is an option for Engineering students interested in developing basic skills in business management. The Capstone course will partner students with successful entrepreneurs from industry in a series of case studies and projects.

This option consists of 21 credit units in courses as an optional add-on to any of the seven Bachelor of Engineering degrees:
COMM 201.3 Accounting and Business Decision-Making
COMM 203.3 Introduction to Finance
COMM 204.3 Introduction to Marketing
COMM 205.3 Production and Operation Management
COMM 208.3 Introduction to Business Law
GE 402.3 Engineering Entrepreneurship Capstone Course [new course]
and one of COMM 447.3 (Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management), COMM 492.3 (Agribusiness Venture Management) or COMM 493.3 (Total Quality Management)

To be admitted to the option, Engineering students must have completed 60 credit units toward the BE degree including statistics. Students add one course per term, as listed above, during their third and fourth year, and complete the remaining courses in an additional term in fifth year.

The Academic Programs Committee approved this Program Option at its Dec. 13, 2004 meeting. Additional information about this program is attached.

2. Approval of revisions to the Anthropology program, and Anthropology minor.
At its October, 2002 meeting, Council approved the reorganization of the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology into the Department of Archaeology and the Department of Religious Studies and Anthropology. The BA and BSc programs in Archaeology are now offered by the Department of Archaeology.

The Department of Religious Studies and Anthropology is revising the BA major and honours program Anthropology and Archaeology and renaming these as BA programs in Anthropology. A Minor in Anthropology is also being created.

The revised program follows a similar structure to the existing program. Of the Anthropology courses required for the degree, approximately two-thirds must be in socio-cultural anthropology, and the remainder may consist of cognate courses taught by anthropologists in other departments (geography, native studies, psychology, religious studies, sociology, women's and gender studies, linguistic anthropology, biological anthropology, and archaeology). The new Anthropology Minor consists of 18 credit units. Three new courses are proposed:
ANTH 227.3 Cultures of Central and Eastern Europe
ANTH 322.3 Visual Anthropology
ANTH 327.3 Anthropology of Development

Three courses are being deleted (ANTH 221.6, 222.3, 425.3).

The Academic Programs Committee discussed academic resources for this program with the faculty, department head and associate dean. The Committee noted that additional resources for the Anthropology program are not being provided at this time and may not be provided during this planning cycle

The Academic Programs Committee approved this program revision at its January 10, 2005 meeting,. The Committee agreed that approval of these revisions at this time is in the best interests of students in the program, so that their academic program can be located in the Department of Religious Studies and Anthropology. While demand for junior anthropology courses can be demonstrated, the viability of the Anthropology major is less obvious. The Committee also agreed that approval of these revisions would be for a limited time with the condition that the College of Arts and Science review the resources for this program and submit additional program revisions to APC by May, 2007. These revisions should show (1) how the program can be made sustainable and viable; (2) how teaching loads of faculty can be reduced to a level conducive to permitting increased research activity of the faculty; and (3) how increased involvement of other anthropologists in the college and in STM in designing the program and teaching in its core areas can be achieved, in accordance with SPR recommendations. 3. Approval of revisions to the Plant Science program.
In accordance with recommendations from SPR for increased integration of specializations, the Department of Plant Science is revising its majors programs in Agronomy, Crop Science, Horticulture, Plant Ecology and Rangeland Resources. The department is establishing a single Plant Science major within which students may pursue "themes" in Horticulture, Agronomy, Rangeland Ecology and Plant Improvement.

Twelve courses are being deleted. Eight are being replaced by or their key elements incorporated into new courses, and four are being deleted because of direction change in resources available.

The Academic Programs Committee approved this program revision at its January 10, 2005 meeting. Additional information is attached.
