The Academic Programs Committee is reporting to Council on the following items:
1. Approval of special topics course.
Under its authority to approve exceptions to the Special Topics Courses policy, the Committee approved at its April 8 meeting the offering for the third time of ARCH 398.3 Special Topics: Archaeostatistics, taught by Professor David Ebert, a term appointment in the department of Archaeology.
2. College of Agriculture - Approval of revisions to the Applied Microbiology and Food Science program.
In accordance with recommendations from SPR for increased integration of specializations and with the direction established by the college plan, the Department of Applied Microbiology and Food Science is revising its majors programs in Applied Microbiology and in Food Science to create a combined specialization in Food and Applied Microbiological Sciences (FAMS). The alphabetic label for FD SC and AP MC courses will be changed to FAMS.
The following new courses are included in this proposal:
FAMS 271.3 Food Biotechnology
FAMS 360.3 Water Microbiology and Safety
FAMS 362.3 Nurtaceuticals and Functional Foods
FAMS 436.3 Fuel Alcohol and Biofuel Production
FAMS 474.3 Food Enzymology
FAMS 492.3 Term Paper and Technical Writing
FAMS 494.6 Research Thesis in Food and Applied Microbiological Sciences
Following consultation with a number of departments and colleges, prerequisites for several of these courses were revised, as noted in the April 5 memo from the college.
The Academic Programs Committee approved this program revision and courses at its April 8, 2005 meeting. The proposal documents are attached.
