The University Secretary is named as an Officer of the University in the University of Saskatchewan Act (1995). The Secretary is responsible to the Board of Governors through the President for the exercise of powers and duties pertaining to university governance and protocol. The Act directs the Secretary to perform all duties assigned under the act, keep all records necessary to the office and perform any other duties that the Senate, Board, Council or General Academic Assembly may require. Such duties include the provision of advice and interpretation to the university community on matters of authority, process and governance as they are prescribed through legislation, by-laws, policies and regulations.

Lea Pennock, PhD was appointed as University Secretary on July 1, 2005.

Her academic background is in English literature; she received her undergraduate degree from the University of Regina in 1980 and an MA and PhD from Queen's University in 1982 and 1987 respectively. Lea served for 12 years as Assistant Registrar and then as Acting Registrar at the University of Saskatchewan, and for four years as Director of Student Information Systems. She also served for an 18-month term as Academic Dean at St. Andrew's College. Lea is a past president of the Association of Registrars of the Universities and Colleges of Canada, and has particular interests in the fields of change management, governance, and university culture.

Cathie Fornssler, B.Ed. with distinction (Sask) provides administrative support to the Academic Programs Committee, Instructional Development Committee, Academic Support Committee, Nominations Committee, as well as faculty promotion, tenure and sabbatical appeal committees. She also administers the Course Challenge and other policies related to the Academic Programs Committee. Please submit the following to Cathie: Course challenge submissions; proposals for new programs, program deletions, major program revisions, changes in admission quotas, examination regulations. Cathie can also answer questions about program change procedures and committee review policies.

Sandra Calver, B.A., with distinction, English (Sask), ARCT piano performance (Royal Conservatory of Music) provides administrative support to the Research, Scholarly and Artistic Work Committee, the Planning and Priorities Committee and Centres Subcommittee. As Coordinator of University Governance, she contributes to the operation of the University’s governing bodies—Senate, University Council, General Academic Assembly and the Board of Governors—and interprets the University Act, bylaws and policies to members of the University community. Please submit Notices of Intent for New programs and Centres proposals to Sandra.
