Establishing Chairs and Professorships

Category:  Academic Affairs
Responsibility:  Vice-Provost
Authorization:  Board of Governors
Approval Date:  June 28, 2001
Reformatted:  July 8, 2005

Purpose:

To ensure chairs and professorships supported by donated funds are established in accordance with the University of Saskatchewan Act, 1995, Section 61(1)(e), and that they contribute to the academic mission of the University and are financially viable based on the scope and objectives of the initiative.

Policy:

Endowed or non-endowed Chairs and Professorships supported by donated funds may be established only with the authorization of Council and the Board of Governors based on guidelines approved from time to time by Council and the Board of Governors. Accordingly, these guidelines will not apply to Chairs supported by Tri-Council funding or similar agencies which are covered by other procedures. In those situations where it is not clear whether the guidelines will apply, the Provost and Vice-President Academic will determine application of the guidelines.

Procedure Summary:

To facilitate this process the Joint Committee on Chairs and Professorships has been established to bring both approving bodies together to ensure that academic, administrative and financial concerns are addressed simultaneously. Under the authority of Council and the Board of Governors the Guidelines for the Establishment of Chairs and Professorships have been approved.

Refer to the Guidelines for the Establishment of Chairs and Professorships for the specific chair descriptions, required funding, procedures and responsibilities.
