Richard Michalenko

I was born in 1954 and grew up on the family farm located south of Redberry Lake. I attended school in Hafford from grade 1 – 12, graduating from grade 12 in 1972.

After attending the University of Saskatchewan from 1972 – 1977, I earned a B.S.P. degree (Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy).

Ayerst Laboratories, a pharmaceutical company, hired me in August 1977. Ayerst subsequently merged with Wyeth, a sister company, which eventually was acquired by Pfizer. I retired from Pfizer Canada as a pharmaceutical business representative in November 2012 after 35 years of service.

I served as an elected regional delegate (representing Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) for CCPE (Council for Continuing Pharmaceutical Education) for a two-year term from 2009 – 2010. In 2010 I received the CCPE “Diamond Award”, a distinction for completing 21 continuing education courses offered to members of the pharmaceutical industry.

My wife Evangie grew up in a neighboring rural community. We are blessed with 5 children and our wishes were to raise them in a rural setting. In 1989, we moved back to our family farm where we currently reside. We farmed in conjunction with our off-farm employment.  Now that we are both retired from our careers, we look forward to self-employment by continuing farming.

Our five children attended the University of Saskatchewan, with our youngest currently in her 3rd year of studies. So far, our family collectively has attended the University of Saskatchewan for well over 20 years!

The University of Saskatchewan has been good to my family by way of providing us with a post secondary education opportunity, which led to acquiring productive and rewarding careers. Participating in university governance as a Senator would be my way of giving something back to a great institution! I have travelled District 12 with my tenure as a pharmaceutical representative. I enjoyed the far north, consisting of Uranium City and Lake Athabasca, as well as the Parkland Region. This district is indeed diverse and unique in culture and geography! I am proud to call it home! It would be a privilege and a great honor to represent District 12 as an elected University Senate member!
