    Dr. Valerie MacDonald Dickinson is a board-certified oncology specialist at the Veterinary Medical Centre (VMC) with a focus on small animals and the occasional equine patient. She is an associate professor in medical oncology at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) and is currently the only medical oncologist at the VMC.

    Dr. MacDonald Dickinson is originally from Pictou, N.S., and graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2000. She spent two years in private practice in Phoenix, Ariz., before moving to Madison, Wis., for a residency in medical oncology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2002. After her residency, Dr. MacDonald Dickinson spent one year at UW-Madison as a clinical instructor before accepting the position of medical oncologist at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM).

    Dr. MacDonald Dickinson is married to a veterinary pathologist and their household includes three sons who are active in hockey, a Labrador retriever and two cats.

    Dr. MacDonald Dickinson’s research interests include patient quality of life, compassion fatigue in veterinarians, the human-animal bond, and the use of metformin in chemotherapy-resistant canine lymphoma.
