World Water Day Student and Young Professional Event - March 22, 2012
In honour of Wolrd Water Day on March 22, GIWS is co-hosting a Water Issues at Home and Abroad student event with Engineers Without Borders and the Canadian Water Resources Association. The event is intended to raise awareness about how Saskatchewan is playing a leading role in addressing water issues and to highlight the innovative research being conducted by U of S students and faculty. Canadian Geophysical Union Western Student Conference - University of Saskatchewan - February 11, 2012
The eleventh annual Western Canada CGU-HS student conference was held at the University of Saskatchewan on February 11th, 2012. The quality of student presentations was very high and students from across Alberta and Saskatchewan had a good deal of time to interact with one another. Thank you to the organizers: Chris Marsh, Dhiraj Pradhananga, Phillip Harder, and Allasdair Morrison. In addition, GIWS faculty, Dr. Helen Baulch and Dr. Andrew Ireson, shared their experiences on the transition from being a student to becoming a faculty.

Global Institute for Water Security Student Social - December 1, 2011
Howard Wheater and the Global Institute for Water Security hosted a successful graduate student social at the Faculty Club on December 1, 2011. Over 30 students from various departments and units across the University of Saskatchewan mingled and networked with Institute staff, faculty and post-doctoral fellows. The event was intended to engage students in the work of the Institute and inform them of upcoming events, conferences and research opportunities.
Institute research theme members supervise over 75 students on water-related research projects and span disciplines from social science to toxicology to civil engineering. This rising group of researchers are integral to securing our water resources and planning for an uncertain future.
Guest lecture by Bob Sandford, author and co-chair of the Forum for Leadership on Water - October 7, 2011
On October 7, 2011, the Global Institute for Water Security hosted a presentation by Bob Sandford, EPCOR chair of the Canadian Partnership Initiative in support of the UN Water For Life decade and associate with the U of S Centre for Hydrology. As part of the National Forum for Leadership on Water, Bob will gave a talk titled Northern Voices, Southern Choices: Water policy lessons for Saskatchewan drawn from leading Canadian and International examples. Following the presentation, he was joined by U of S water experts Patricia Gober, John Pomeroy and Howard Wheater to discuss regional water policy issues. Over 100 people were in attendance.

Public Presentation by distinguished professor, Jeffrey McDonnell, Oregon State University - October 4, 2011
On Tuesday, October 4, 2011 Jeffrey McDonnell, Distinguished Professor of Hydrology and Richardson Chair in Watershed Science from Oregon State University presented a seminar entitled The Link Between Hydrological Process Understanding and Water Security.

Global Institute for Water Security hosts Canadian Council of Academies meeting - September 12 and 13, 2011
On September 12 and 13, the Global Institute for Water Security hosted the fall meeting of the CCA Expert Panel on Sustainable Management of Water in the Agriculture Landscapes of Canada. This was the second meeting of the CCA expert panel, which has been tasked by the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food to report on what additional science is needed to better guide sustainable management of water to meet the needs of agriculture. Howard Wheater, Executive Director of the Institute, chairs the panel.

IP3 Triple Header Finale - September 7 - 9, 2011
With funding for the IP3 network - which has been headquartered at the U of S Centre for Hydrology - to end in September 2011, a series of workshops were scheduled to share final results with the larger cold regions hydrology and water resources communities. These workshops focused on the advances made by the network in scientific understanding and modelling capability.
U of S Water Week 2011
U of S Water Week was held March 21 - 25, 2011 and showcased top U of S water researchers and invited experts. Thank you to all who joined us. Videos of the noon-hour lecture series are available on the U of S Research YouTube channel.
