Student Members
The Global Institute for Water Security is committed to offering opportunities for students to join in activities that develop their understanding of the challenges of water security, and foster in them an appreciation for the need to bring a wide range of expertise together to address these critical issues. The institute welcomes student members from the natural sciences and engineering, as well as the humanities and social sciences, and encourages them to learn from each other about the many dimensions of water security.
Student Member CommitteeThe Student Member Committee organizes student events centred on various water themes to encourage collaboration, leadership, research and networking. These include student mixers, panel presentations, movie nights and Blue Drinks at local watering holes. The committee includes master's students Raea Gooding, Kerry Head, Kristine Hunter, and Jessica Johansson, and PhD students Chris Marsh and Kathryn Hearson. Degree Pursuing:Master of Science Thesis Description:Shawn holds a B.Sc. with high honours from the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan. He majored in Toxicology and following the degree, was employed as a lab technician with the Toxicology Centre. Shawn is currently pursuing his master of science in toxicology and is identifying and classifying chemicals found in Swift Current Creek water and in City of Saskatoon storm water run-off. Certain research methods will be used to classify whether the compounds are of environmental concern. Shawn's research intersts include identifying sensitivity of North American native fish species to endocrine disrupting chemicals, as exposure these compounds can have significant impacts on wild fish populations. He is also interest in characterizing contamination of prairie water bodies using bioassay directed analysis, as fish and other aquatic life may be exposed to these contaminants in Saskatchewan streams, rivers and lakes.

During that time, she was both the secretary and event planner for the U of S Environmental Studies Student Association. Stacey also worked for Environment Canada's National Hydrology Research Centre for three years as a student and contractor. Her interests are generally focused around changing climates and the effects it has in the prairie region. Her masters research will focus on changes in hydrology in a prairie pothole setting in Smith Creek, Saskatchewan, a research site of the Global Institute for Water Security. Thesis Description:Raea Gooding holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree from the University of Saskatchewan, where she majored in Agricultural Biology and minored in animal science. Beginning in September 2012, Raea will begin her Masters of Environment and Sustainability, working with assistant professor and GIWS member Helen Baulch. Raea is primarily interested in the impact of agricultural production on the environment and on wildlife populations. Her Master's project will focus on nutrient levels and processes in a stream of Tobacco Creek, Manitoba, at a site where beneficial management practices are being implemented. She is particularly interested in the issue of eutrophication of Lake Winnipeg and elsewhere. He held several research assistant positions related to hydrological research at the U of S as well as Environment Canada. He also served as the Data Manager for the Drought Research Insistute (DRI) until 2011. His graduate research focuses on the phase of precipitation and its relation to meteorological conditions in an alpine research basin (Marmot Creek). Development of a physically-based psychrometric relationship to identify phase is planned and the termporal scaling of the relationship is being examined. Degree Pursuing:MSc Thesis Description:Kerry received her BSc from the University of Saskatchewan in 2011. Shortly after this she began working in GIWS member Jeff Hudson's limnology lab to research her master's degree. She is studying climate change in the South Saskatchewan River Basin in order to better understand the potential impact on fish habitat. The aim of her research project is to develop models that are able to predict flow in the South Saskatchewan River based on climate, and use these to predict the impact on native fish populations. The project hopes to produce a tool that can be used by decision makers to help with the development of long-term conservation strategies.

Degree Pursuing:PhD Thesis Description:Kathryn holds a BSc in civil engineering from the University of Manitoba, and an MSc in environmental policy and regulation from the London School of Economics. In addition, she was an Environmental Manager with SNC-Lavalin Inc. Environment Division from January - December 2011. Her research aims to characterize the constituent chemical loading from mature, fine tailings to the overlying water cap in end pit lakes. End pit lakes are a major part of each oil sand operator's reclamation strategy, but their success as a containment system is still unknown.

She is currently a graduate student researching nutrient concentrations and limitation in Lake Diefenbaker and is part of Jeff Hudson's Global Institute for Water Security-funded research team. She is looking at areas that are potentially being affected by anthropogenic activities within the lake as well as the nutrient condition of the entire reservoir. Her study is being conducted over two years, with five months of sampling each year.

Research interests:
Lucas comes from an environmental biology background, and is particularly interested in how anthropogenic activities can influence community structure within ecosystems. His current research allows him the opportunity to reconstruct the composition of past diatom and chironomid communities in lake Diefenbaker and interpret observed trends in community composition from an ecotoxicological perspective. Lucas' research goal is to reconstruct past trends in the nutrient status of Lake Diefenbaker using palelimnological techniques. Based on observations made following his first year of study, his research team hopes to identify sites of toxicological interest and determine whether toxicity can be observed in 10-day whole-sediment toxicity tests using chironomids. From July 2011 to April 2012, he worked as a research assistant in the Physical Hydrology Laboratory at the U of C. Joel's graduate work involves the feasibility and potential limitations of designing a mine waste cover system for use with abandoned mines in Northern Canada. The design will utilize the materials available and the climate of the region to create a seasonally frozen layered system, which will divert infiltrating snowmelt away from mine waste and prevent contamination.
