Biography:

• He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and six books, and has won several academic awards, including Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water.
• He holds the appointment of Distinguished Research Fellow and Emeritus Professor of Hydrology at Imperial College London where he was head of Environmental and Water Resource Engineering and the first Director of the Imperial College Environment Forum
• Recent appointments include:
  • Member of the Alberta Environment Monitoring Panel, advising on the establishment of a world class monitoring and evaluation system for the Alberta oil sands
  • Chair of the Council of Canadian Academies Expert Panel on Sustainable Management of Water in the Agricultural Landscapes of Canada
  • Member of the Water Partner Advisory Committee advising the Premiers’ Council of the Federation Water Stewardship
  • Member of an International Court of Arbitration concerning the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty

Biography:

Phani is a certified Professional Engineer registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan. Before joining the Global Institute for Water Security, he was with the College of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) for 11 years. During his tenure, he assisted the college in enhancing research intensiveness through development of new partnerships and facilitation of existing collaborations with internal and external stakeholders, industry partners, provincial, federal and international agencies and institutes for pursuing funding opportunities that could support recruitment of highly-qualified personnel, facilitate visits of internal and external faculty members, and development of new programs to support the college's research enterprise.

As part of his professional development, he has published 26 refereed journal articles, three book chapters and has 25 conference proceedings/presentations. In 2009, he was awarded the George Ira Hanson Post-Graduate Award for Energy Research by the U of S College of Engineering. In 2012, the Canadian Society for Bioengineers recognized his research contributions and bestowed him with their PhD thesis award. 

He served as the Vice-President Academic for the U of S Graduate Students Association (GSA) from 1999-2000. Also, he was elected as one of the five Canadian men’s cricket team selection committee members (2009-10), elected as the President of Saskatoon Cricket Association (2005-10) and elected as the Vice-President of Saskatchewan Cricket Association (2007-10).
