Subject: ethology poetry From: Olsson@ibmc.up.pt Date: Thu, 02 Apr 2009 22:25:15 +0100 To: applied-ethology@usask.ca Several years ago Joe Stookey asked for ethology poetry after contributing a great verse of his own. I know my response is a bit late - nearly 800 years late, in fact. (It may on the other hand be argued that it's a bit too early to talk about summer.) Anyway, isn't this music for both ethologist and linguist ears? Sumer is i-cumen in, Lhude sing cuccu! Groweth sed, And bloweth med, And springeth the wde nu: Sing cuccu! cuccu! Awe bleteth after lamb, Lhouth after calve cu; Bulluc sterteth, Bucke verteth, Murie sing cuccu! Cuccu, cuccu! Wel singes thu cuccu, Ne swik thou nauer nu! Sing cuccu nu! Sing cuccu! The text will be more obvious to speakers of English and Germanic languages, but the music is for everyone. I don’t think it fits in the category of ethology, don’t expect it to be ranked as poetry, and doubt very much that it will be put to music! But it is an attempt to express how I feel about creeping metropolitan sprawl – especially that associated with my campus.
