My name is Kim Hawkins, I have recently started a PhD on the welfare of domestic cats in shelters, at the university of Southampton under the supervision of John Bradshaw and Rachel Casey. My initial project will be measuring cortisol/creatinine ratios in cats' urine and comparing them to behavioural measures of stress. Further work may include preference tests/behavioural economics. I graduated from Oxford with a biology degree two years ago (my research project was on spitting behaviour in archerfish) and went on to do a biology MSc there. This included research work on the population genetics of the melanocortin-1-receptor gene in bananaquits (small Caribbean birds), and into the use of 'peep' calls of domestic chickens as a possible welfare indicator. I have worked for the last nine years in the field of animal welfare/rescue here in Saudi Arabia. Although I have no formal qualifications, I am very interested in learning more about animal behaviour with the idea of improving the welfare of the animals which more often than not find themselves in our care through no fault of their own. Whilst the majority of the animals in our care come to us as kittens and puppies and we are able to socialize them in readiness for rehoming, we do deal with animals, particularly dogs, with behavioural problems. Problems range from housetraining or rather lack of, through house wrecking to aggression including attacking fosterers and new owners. One of my main concerns is the welfare of animals in long-term foster care particularly those in cages which then go to homes only to be brought back due to problems such as inappropriate urination/defecation, chewing, barking, scratching furniture or aggression. With new-found knowledge I hope to encourage owners to keep their animals and work through various behavioural problems which arise. One area of treatment I am particularly interested in, is the use of Flower/ Homeopathic remedies to help alleviate problems. (AP) -- A large pig-producing business near here has reported more than 100 sow deaths to heat and humidity. The operation, known as EnviroPork, is one of the largest " confined hog" operations in the region, with the capacity to house 5, 000 sows that produce about 110, 000 pigs a year. Its managers would not comment on the number of hogs at the farm now or exactly how many died. But state Health Department officials, who oversee air and water quality, said the business reported that about 125 sows died Saturday. EnviroPork tries to keep its barns full, at or near the capacity of 5, 000 sows, health department officials said. " It upset me, " manager Todd Erickson said of the losses. " I' ve got crews that worked really, really hard the other day." Humidity is a problem for hogs in such confined barns, even with cooling fans and ventilation. " We had hotter air temperatures (Monday) and didn' t have any problems. We have pretty sophisticated equipment, and we can cool when there' s (not such high) humidity, " Erickson said. " It was the humidity that got them. It was a freak day (Saturday.)" The heat index, figured by the National Weather Service as what the air temperature feels like when humidity is taken into account, was at more than 110 degrees Saturday. EnviroPork contacted the Health Department to seek help in proper disposal of the carcasses, said Gary Haberstroh, an environmental engineer with the department. EnviroPork delivered some carcasses to a St. Cloud, Minn., rendering plant and kept others in a freezer unit temporarily, Haberstroh said. The large number of deaths overwhelmed EnviroPork' s routine, but Erickson and his employees handled the situation well, Haberstroh said. " They just didn' t have much extra room, " he said. EnviroPork has been in compliance with " nutrient management and waste water regulations, " and only occasionally has " a little blip, " in keeping odors within prescribed limits, said Dennis Fewless, director of the health department' s water quality division. The business has a plan to deal with animals that die, Fewless said, " just not for this many." EnviroPork opened in January 1998. A privately held company, Dakota Facilities, LLC, owns the land and buildings and a cooperative of about 30 farmer members, mostly from western Minnesota and southeast North Dakota, owns the animals and the farm operation. I work at a Refuge in Australia and we are the process of considering designs for the new dogs pens when we pull down and rebuild next year. Are there any guidelines/ references on this sort of thing?. I need to marry all the variables, like welfare, behaviour, disease transmission, noise, smell, cleaning, climate (sub-tropical environment): group vs single housing, how much visual/ direct contact etc. Any information gratefully received. The aim is to give them information about behaviour and responsible pet ownership to facilitate successful long term matches between dogs and people. I am wondering what has been the experience of others who have done this?? What questions did you ask and what information did you provide?. How were the sessions structured?.
