Dear Paul,

The use of carbon dioxide is recommended for small mammals. You might find
useful informations about in:

Smith W., Harrap S.B., 1997. Behavioural and cardiovascular responses of
rats to euthanasia using carbon doixide gas. Laboratory Animals 31: 337-346

Smith A.W., et al., 1986. Report of the AVMA panel on euthanasia. J. Am.
Vet. Med. Ass. 188: 252-268.

In addition, several years ago the Am. Soc. Mammalogists developed some
guidelines about the use of mammals for research and their euthanasia was
considered as well. Those guidlines were published on the J. of Mammalogy.

Good work,

Davide

Dear network user,

my name is Renate Luise Doerfler. I am a PhD student at the Department of
Tropical and Subtropical Animal Breeding under the supervision of Prof. Dr.
K.J. Peters in the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture of the
Humboldt-University of Berlin (Germany).

Within the context of my PhD programme I am doing research on the
assessment of animal welfare in tropical livestock production systems, a mainly
methodological problem. As far as the applied ethology is concerned my special
interest lays in behavioural studies of tropical farm animal species.

I am looking forward to interesting discussions and sending you my very
best wishes for 2001.

Yours sincerely,

Renate Doerfler

Just my ha'penny's worth, and this is speaking from what i know about mink
and poultry- but bear in mind though that mink and poultry at least find CO2
aversive. not surprising really, because a) CO2 is actually acidic; b) CO2,
not O2 regulate he control of breathing etc, so elevating CO2 may well
increase respiratory distress more than removing O2 with an inert gas.

As a result, we use argon-induced anoxia to euthanise our poultry. Check out
mohan raj's stuff.

cheers

Joe

There is an article on CO2 euthanasia in the home cage, for rats, in a recent issue of Laboratory Animals which seemed to find it effective and without apparent welfare concerns. This article also outlines just how to carry out the procedure

Hi folks,
Recently there was a discussion on the listserve about corporations taking on the animal welfare issue (McDonalds in particular). I bring this issue up again, because although some corporations seem to be taking animal welfare issues seriously, others show very little responsibility. Case in point, Tyson's Poultry (the largest US poultry company, probably the largest world-wide) left thousands of broiler breeders outside in the snow and ice when barns collapsed in Arkansas. The birds were left for 2-3 weeks, without access to water, shelter, or food, while company technicians continued to service the buildings still standing. (see our website for video coverage, www.hsus.org or www.animalchannel.net).
I find it amazing and incredibly frustrating that companies as large as Tysons do not have disaster plans in effect, particularly when Tysons lost 275 barns last January in Arkansas in exactly the same situation (ice storms causing roofs to collapse).

Dear all,

I'm looking into the possibility of purchasing equipment for 24-h behaviour reco
rding in laboratory animal facilities (rodents). Thus equipment time-lapse recor
ding, with facilities for recordings at low light and with infrared lamps and pr
eferrably also allowing sequential recording of several cameras. Important consi
derations for me are how easy it is to set up and handle the system, size of the
components and of course relation cost-quality. I would appreciate to hear your
experiences of such equipment presently available on the European market.

In addition, I would be interested to hear your experiences of working with rode
nts and video equipment, in relation to the possible ultrasound emittence (of th
e equipment :-) !

Dear Anna,

I suggest you look up Gill Sales work on ultrasound and rodents.
I was once doing experiments in a shed which had wild mice
living in it. I would often see mouse droppings on the computer
monitor (these apparently emit ultrasound), so ultrasound might
not be all that aversive - although it might be the animal's
ability to escape the noise that makes it acceptable/aversive.

It might be worth contacting a security company for the latest
technology in low-light/infra red cameras and multiplexor video
recorders.

Best wishes,

Chris

ISAE 2001

35th INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE ISAE
University of California, Davis, August 4-8, 2001

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

CONGRESS LOCATION
The Congress will be held on the campus of the University of California,
Davis. UC Davis is acknowledged as a leader in agricultural, veterinary,
biological, biotechnological, and environmental sciences. It is home to
Animal Behavior Graduate Group, a group of more than 50 faculty and graduate
students from a variety of colleges and disciplines studying the behavior of
domestic, captive, and wild animals. Davis itself is a charming small
university town known for its bookstores, coffee shops, and art galleries,
and its extensive network of bike paths and bike roads. Davis is located in
the Central Valley of California, one of the richest and most diverse
agricultural areas in the world. Davis is ideally located for exploring
northern California: San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma Valley, the Sierra
Nevada mountain range, and Lake Tahoe are on the doorstep.

TRANSPORT TO THE CONGRESS
The closest airport is the Sacramento International Airport. Shuttles are
available from the airport directly to campus, a journey of about 20
minutes. Limited shuttle service is also available from the San Francisco
International airport, about a 2-hour journey. Davis is easily accessible by
car from Interstate 80, and there is also train service to Davis from many
other locations in California, including downtown San Francisco.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
The ISAE Congress will be held in sequence with two other international
conferences on the UC Davis campus of interest to ISAE members. The first,
on August 1-2, is Nature in Legend and Story (NILAS), with a theme of
“Animals in Folklore and Literature.” The second, on August 3-4, is the
International Society for Anthrozoology (ISAZ), with a theme of
“Human-Animal Conflict”. There will be a discounted registration fee for
individuals who register for more than one meeting.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
The Congress will begin at 1700 on August 4 with the opening and Wood-Gush
Memorial lecture, followed by a joint reception with ISAZ. Contributed
scientific sessions will begin at 0900 on the morning of August 5. There
will be six plenary talks (40 minutes including discussion) chosen from
among the submitted abstracts, about 60 spoken presentations (20 minutes
including discussion) delivered in parallel sessions, and poster sessions.
Special topics for the Congress are:
Companion animal behavior
Influence of genetics on behavior and welfare
Free papers are also invited, and these will be grouped into appropriate
sessions. Roundtables will also be organized; suggestions should be sent to
the conference organizers.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
We strongly encourage you to submit your abstracts using our on-line
submission system. This will greatly streamline the formatting, reviewing,
and publishing of your abstract. To submit online, go to the Congress
website at http://animalwelfare.ucdavis.edu/conference/futureconf/html and
follow the instructions for Abstract Submission. The deadline for abstract
submission is Feb 15, 2001.
If you must submit your abstract by email or conventional mail (on
diskette), if at all possible use the forms (both abstract and abstract
transmittal forms) and examples provided with this announcement, which are
also available on the Congress website. Your abstract should be composed
using 12 point Times New Roman font in Word or Word Perfect, and follow this
exact format:

Sample Abstract______________________________

Title of my abstract in sentence case

I.M. Firstauthor1, I.M. Secondauthor1 and I.M. Thirdauthor2

1 Full address of first and second authors, including Department,
Institution, Street Address, City, Country, postcode
2 Full address of other author(s)

This is the body of my abstract, in which I describe the purpose of my
study, the methods used, the statistical analysis, results and conclusions….

I need more than one paragraph to do this, so I skipped a line for the
second (and each subsequent) paragraph, although without indenting the new
paragraphs.
____________________________________

The body of the abstract should contain no more than 300 words. Abstracts
not in the correct format will be returned to the corresponding author for
reformatting.

A cover sheet should be submitted along with the abstract that provides the
following information:
Name and contact information (including email address) for the corresponding
author
Name of presenting author
Preference for spoken paper, poster, or plenary
An indication of whether the presenting author is a graduate student or
young scientist
Type of contribution (plenary, spoken paper, poster, roundtable); indicate
both first and second choice
Preferred section (Companion animal behavior; Genetic Influences on behavior
and welfare; free papers)
The primary species of animal used in the study, and whether the research is
primarily in the farm, zoo, laboratory, companion, or zoo setting
Three keywords that can be used to classify your abstract for the purpose of
selecting reviewers and organizing the parallel sessions
Two referees will review each abstract. The names of the authors will be
removed from the abstracts prior to being sent to the reviewers to ensure
anonymity. Authors will be informed about acceptance of abstracts in early
April; revised abstracts are due May 1. Speakers whose abstracts have been
selected for plenary talks will be requested to submit an expanded abstract.

SOCIAL PROGRAM, HOUSING, AND REGISTRATION
The opening reception will be held at the John Natsoulas art gallery. A
variety of technical and social tours will be available, including tours of
animal facilities on the Davis campus, zoos and marine facilities, and, for
those of you who are particularly interested in horticulture (viticulture?),
wine tasting in the Napa Valley. Information about housing and registration
costs will be available after January 1, 2001 on the Congress website.
Official housing for the Congress will be in campus student dormitories;
however, there are also a number of reasonably priced motels and hotels
nearby. The deadline for ordinary registration is June 1, 2001.

ORGANIZING AND SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Joy Mench (Chair), Ian Duncan,
Joseph Garner, Lynette Hart, Sue Heekin, Cheryl Meehan, Robert Murphey,
Edward Price, James Serpell, Ray Stricklin, Carolyn Stull

ADDRESSES: Questions about the Congress and abstracts should be sent to ISAE

> 35th INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE ISAE
> University of California, Davis, August 4-8, 2001
>
> FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
>
> CONGRESS LOCATION
> The Congress will be held on the campus of the University of
> California,
> Davis. UC Davis is acknowledged as a leader in agricultural,
> veterinary,
> biological, biotechnological, and environmental sciences. It
> is home to
> Animal Behavior Graduate Group, a group of more than 50
> faculty and graduate
> students from a variety of colleges and disciplines studying
> the behavior of
> domestic, captive, and wild animals. Davis itself is a charming small
> university town known for its bookstores, coffee shops, and
> art galleries,
> and its extensive network of bike paths and bike roads. Davis
> is located in
> the Central Valley of California, one of the richest and most diverse
> agricultural areas in the world. Davis is ideally located
> for exploring
> northern California: San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma Valley, the Sierra
> Nevada mountain range, and Lake Tahoe are on the doorstep.
>
> TRANSPORT TO THE CONGRESS
> The closest airport is the Sacramento International Airport.
> Shuttles are
> available from the airport directly to campus, a journey of about 20
> minutes. Limited shuttle service is also available from the
> San Francisco
> International airport, about a 2-hour journey. Davis is
> easily accessible by
> car from Interstate 80, and there is also train service to
> Davis from many
> other locations in California, including downtown San Francisco.
>
> SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
> The ISAE Congress will be held in sequence with two other
> international
> conferences on the UC Davis campus of interest to ISAE
> members. The first,
> on August 1-2, is Nature in Legend and Story (NILAS), with a theme of
> "Animals in Folklore and Literature." The second, on August
> 3-4, is the
> International Society for Anthrozoology (ISAZ), with a theme of
> "Human-Animal Conflict". There will be a discounted
> registration fee for
> individuals who register for more than one meeting.
>
> SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
> The Congress will begin at 1700 on August 4 with the opening
> and Wood-Gush
> Memorial lecture, followed by a joint reception with ISAZ.
> Contributed
> scientific sessions will begin at 0900 on the morning of
> August 5. There
> will be six plenary talks (40 minutes including discussion)
> chosen from
> among the submitted abstracts, about 60 spoken presentations
> (20 minutes
> including discussion) delivered in parallel sessions, and
> poster sessions.
> Special topics for the Congress are:
> Companion animal behavior
> Influence of genetics on behavior and welfare
> Free papers are also invited, and these will be grouped into
> appropriate
> sessions. Roundtables will also be organized; suggestions
> should be sent to
> the conference organizers.
>
> ABSTRACT SUBMISSION
> We strongly encourage you to submit your abstracts using our on-line

I would appreciate any comments that members have on the problem below,
which was sent to me by a colleague. it is not something I am familiar with:

I was asked by a practicing veterinarian about the following subject:

He visited a farm were a group of about 40 heifers (belgian blue beef
cattle) were housed in 4 separate groups of each 10 animals in straw covered
boxes. A few months ago the animals started to develop the behaviour of
licking each others perineal region, thus stimulating the "treated" cow to
urinate and giving the one who licked a warm shower on the head. This
behaviour evolved in this way that when a cow starts urinating, several
others hurry themselves to catch the urine on their heads. Up till now the
animals did not develop any secondary problems except from some mild skin
irritations around the head. With higher temperatures in spring and summer,
one would expect flies to be attracted and myasis problems to occur.
The farmer already tried to give the animals some extraction by means of a
mineral stone. But this seems not to improve anything.

Are you familiar with this problem? Is there any explanation for it? How do
we treat?

Many thanks for any assisatnce you can offer, i can try to get more
information if anyone wishes

Daniel,

What I am curious about is whether the heifers are actually attempting to
consume or taste the urine, or are they just letting it splash on their
heads (are their noses up or down when they do this)? If they are tasting
it, then I have two suggestions of things to rule out. One is to review
the feed they are being given and make sure there isn't a mineral
deficiency. Or perhaps something in the food is leading to a urine that
has an unusually desirable flavor. The second thing that I am wondering is
whether any of those heifers are freemartins or have some other
reproductive issues.

Your description said that there were 10 heifers in 4 groups and also said
that now when a cow urinates "several" others hurry over to catch the
urine. Is this occurring in all 4 groups? Is it always the same cows that
come over to the urine? Are all 40 doing this at times or only a subset of
the 40 who do it most of the time? If it is a subset, then I would check
to see that they are reproductively normal. If these cows are un-bred but
cycling, does their interest in urine follow their reproductive cycle?
Certainly males ruminants will rush over to a urinating female and check
out their urine (although they generally stick their noses in it, not their
entire heads, but if several cows are jostling around for access to the
urine, then perhaps this can explain why it is getting on their entire
heads). I am wondering if something (environmental pollutant, contaminated
feed, etc.) is "masculinizing" the behavior of these cows.

Now, if you rule out nutritional and reproductive issues and the cows are
still engaging in this behavior, then you might have an interesting set-up
to do research on social learning. You could take the cows that were
engaging in this behavior and place them with another set of cows which do
not do it and see if the other cows learn by observation and also start
doing this. Then you could record the information transfer through the new
herd. Who knows, it could be an interesting bit of research.

Subj:	Very extensive housing of indoor lactating sows

Dear all,
This is not strictly an ethology question, but your answers will be used in context with descriptions of sow-piglet behaviour, so I hope you will bear with me.

I am going to give a presentation to a group of outdoor pig producers, who are interested in the various possibilites for indoor loosehousing of farrowing and lactating sows. I will tell them about pens that are being commercially used in insulated buildings in Denmark.

However, they are also interested in very extensive systems (e.g. noninsulated buildings (-that allow for outdoor temp. down to -20 C), access to outdoor areas, plenty of space per sow, plenty of bedding). I can find almost no litterature on these types of solutions. If any of you can help me with references or just your experiences in this area, I would be very grateful.

Thanking you in advance,
