Hi Joe,
could you post the following on applied-ethology please?

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is planning to hire a number of post
doctoral scientists in the area of farm animal welfare. The primary
responsibility will be to conduct literature reviews to examine the
scientific basis of Canada's Codes of Practice for the Care and Handling
of Livestock and to compare these with other regulations, standards etc.
There will also be some opportunities to conduct research in farm animal
behaviour and welfare. The first post should be open from April 1, but
hopefully others will be open soon after. If you want further details,
please contact me. However, you need to apply for these positions
through the NSERC program Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government
Laboratories. The web page address is:
http://www.nserc.ca/guide/sf/3d_e.htm

There is no deadline for application. However, we hope to be hiring as
soon as we can so if you are interested, please apply ASAP.

Happy New Year.

Jeff Rushen

Subj:	Support for sow when lying down

Dear all,
I am involved in a project where we want to provide sows with support for =
lying down in a farrowing pen. I would be very grateful for information on =
what designs have been or are being used and how they work. I am interested=
both in references to scientific and non scientific journals and in =
general experiences.

I am aware of the work that has been published on the extent to which sows =
lie down by leaning against a surface as opposed to lying down in the =
open, and what characterises supported and unsupported lying down. =
However, more specific information on support designs and materials (e.g. =
sloping walls, flexible rubber balls) is scarce. Can you help me?

Thanking you in advance and wishing you all a Happy New Year,

Subj:	Milk fat content

Dear all,

Apologies for asking a question which is not really about ethology, but
you're such a knowledgeable crowd that I'm sure this is the right forum
anyway.

I was asked the other day why Holstein cows have a fat content of 3-5-4 %
whereas other breeds (Jersey and some of the indigenous Portuguese breeds
are the ones I know of) have 6-7% fat. Well, I couldn't answer, and started
to think more about this. What is likely to have been the 'initial' fat
content of cow milk, before direct selection started? Do Holstein cows have
a relatively low fat content because they have been heavily bred for total
production? Or do Jerseys have a high fat content because they have been
selected for that?

Looking forward to being enlightened!

Best wishes
Anna

Hello everyone,

I am new to the list and wanted to briefly introduce myself to all of you. My main interest is wolves and I operate a small government licensed non-profit wolf education and resource centre near London, Ontario, Canada. As well as wolves, we house coyotes, foxes, and raccoons. I'm very interested in species-specific behaviors and also, in the behavior and motivation of captive animals as it differs from their wild conspecifics. I hope to learn much from this list and hopefully, will be able to contribute valuable information as well.

Subj:	New address

Hello Everyone,

Happy New Year!

I've just moved post to a senior lectureship in animal behaviour and
welfare at Chester University College, UK, with a new research remit as
follows.

My new role is to develop research programmes in companion and farm
animal behaviour and welfare as part of the Chester Centre for Stress
Research; and to input into the animal behaviour and animal behaviour
& welfare degrees. My current focus is on horses, with projects in
racehorse welfare, equine temperament and human-horse
relationships; though this will expand.

I've learnt a lot from this network since I joined a year or so ago. It's a
great mix of hands-on and academic input across the range of species.
Thanks everyone.

My new contact details are at the end of this message.

Cheers,
Emma.

Dear all

I am currently completing an MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal
Welfare at Edinburgh University, and will have to complete a project this
summer (June-August) to submit in September as part of my MSc.

I am interested primarily in the areas of wild animals, their behavioural
ecology and conservation, with particular reference to the large cats,
raptors, marine mammals and cephalopods.

I wondered if anyone knows of any current research being undertaken with
regard to any of the above aspects and animals. I would be most grateful
for any input and guidance.

Best wishes and a happy new year to you all,
Corinne

Dear All,

Can someone tell me about the control of an unsuccessful transgenic animal?
If an animal (e.g. a sheep, a cow or a pig) accepts the gene transferring
treatment but could not be confirmed later whether it has the transferred
gene in its body somewhere and this animal is no longer for any experiment,
what should we do for this animal? Is there any regulation in any country
to control such animals?

I appreciate any information offered.

Subj:	Introduction and some news

Hello all. I recently finished my Ph.D. under Dr. Temple Grandin at
Colorado State University. There I studied a lot of different aspects of
livestock behavior, welfare, temperament, transportation, meat/milk
quality, and management practices. Mostly, I tried to take all the
little pictures and make sense of the larger picture that they
comprised. Currently I work with Dr. Mike Appleby and the rest of the
crew in the Farm Animals section of the Humane Society of the US. This
leads me to the news. I'll simply cut and paste the announcement, and
apologize for not re-writing it. I do look forward to being a part of
this net, and hearing all your comments on behavior and the like.

Application for the Graduate Student Travel Award
from The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)

We would like to thank you for your interest in animal welfare and
invite you to apply for our annual travel award to attend the
International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE) International Congress
www.isae2003.org.

The HSUS Graduate Student Travel Awards were developed with the
following objectives:

*	To raise the profile of farm animal welfare as a discipline in
animal/veterinary science colleges.
*	To encourage students to investigate farm animal welfare issues.
*	To provide students with the opportunity to attend the ISAE
meeting, where they will meet with, and learn from, others working in
this discipline.
*	To draw attention to particular issues affecting farm animal
welfare.
*	To provide additional opportunity for exciting and innovating
welfare research to be presented to the scientific community.

The following items are necessary for your application to be considered:

1.	Your name, contact information, academic institution, level of
study, and the name of your major advisor.
2.	An abstract of your research, which you would present at the
International Congress. Travel awards are contingent on the acceptance
of your abstract by the ISAE committee. Application for this travel
award does not suggest that ISAE has received or will accept your
abstract. Please visit www.isae2003.org for information on submitting
abstracts to ISAE.
3.	Status of your abstract acceptance by the ISAE committee (e.g.
accepted, in review)
4.	Itemized list of travel expenses in US currency.
5.	Letter of recommendation from your major advisor indicating why
you should be selected to receive this award.
6.	A letter from you indicating your interest in animal welfare,
relevance of your research to the advancement of animal welfare,
financial need, and why it is important for you to attend this
conference.

Note: Please include your name on all pages and (or) attachments.

Deadline: Completed application must be received by 17 March 2003.
Applications are accepted via e-mail. Please send the application to the
following address.

I look forward to receiving your application. If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact me.

Subj:	Introduction

Dear List Members,

I graduated last summer (2002) from Anglia Polytechnic University (in
Cambridge, UK) with a BSc Combined Honours in Animal Behaviour and Spanish.
My BSc-Thesis was on Feeding enrichment for maned wolves (Chrysocyon
brachyurus) at Chester Zoo, UK.
Generally, I am very interested in many different aspects of animal
behaviour, and my main interests lie in animal communication, social
behaviour and animal welfare.
I joined this list mainly because I would like to learn from it, and also to
find out about possibilities of further study or job opportunities, and, of
course, if I feel to be in the position to be able to do so, I would be
happy to contribute to the discussions.

Happy new year to everyone,

Brigitte Wesserle.
