Subj:	drugs reducing behaviour

Hi all, a while ago there was a discussion between members about the
possibility that behaviour modifying drugs reduce ALL behaviours, not just
the problem behaviour they are prescribed for. Does anyone have or know of
any references on this? Any input would be much appreciated.
Kind Regards, Jessica.

Subj:	RE: drugs reducing behaviour

Okay, I 'fes up, that was me.

As i have said before, ALL the drugs used to treat "compulsive disorder" (a
rag-bag diagnosis that i have real issues with that includes behaviours as
diverse as feather plucking, psychogenic alopecia, pica, true stereotypies
and more) induce a general behavioural supression as a major side-effect.
This side effect is NEVER controlled for in the veterinary
psychopharmacology literature, even though it is clearly present in almost
all studies. As a result, in all these studies, "compulsive disorder" may
have been "treated" by simply suppressing all behaviour. There may be no
selective therapeutic effect at all, and thus you have enagaged in an entire
cosmetic chemical surgery, that leaves the real underlying stressors as
motivational factors unaddressed. As a result the animal continues to suffer
even though it is no longer expressing that suffering (or anything else for
that matter) in behaviour.

However, there is a vicious circle in the vet literature, in that because
these side effects are never discussed, few vets know about them, so few
people are critical of the studies, so the studies continue without
addressing parkinsonian side effects, so the side effects are never
discussed. My frequent comments on this issue are my way of trying to break
that circle.

To learn more about side effects you will have to venture out of the vet
literature. A good place to start is:

Feldman, R. S., Meyer, J. S., & Quenzer, L. F. (1997). Principles of
neuropsychopharmacology. Sunderland, MA, USA, Sinauer Associates, Inc.
Julien, R. M. (1998). A primer of drug action : a concise, nontechnical
guide to the actions, uses, and side effects of psychoactive drugs. New
York, W.H. Freeman.

The internet is a great place to find out the things "they" don't want you
to know. For starters, try the infomed drug guide:

http://www.infomed.org/100drugs/

A really excellent exposition of the side effects and withdrawl symptoms of
SSRIs (clomiprmaine, prozac, etc) can be found in :

Glenmullen, J. (2000). Prozac backlash : overcoming the dangers of prozac,
zoloft, paxil, and other antidepressants with safe, effective alternatives.
New York, Simon & Schuster.

You can then of course turn to the primary literature, using search engines
such as medline, ISI, or sciencedirect, but the psychopharmacology
literature is so vast you really need to know what you are looking for.

"General supression of behaviour" won't work. The common technical terms for
this sort of syptom are "parkinsonism" and "extrapyramidal" side effects.

Drug interaction studies are also very informative. Most drugs which induce
parkinsonism will exaccerbate the parkinsonian action of haloperidol, and
antagonise (counteract) the action of amphetamine. Examples include:
haloperidol and other neuorleptics; naloxone, nafamene and other similar
opiate antagonists; and SSRIs.

hope that gets you going for starters. I have a bunch of
neuropsychopharmacology papers to hand if you are still interested, but
they're really hard going unless your used to that literature.

I actually have a user-friendly review on the subject submitted, which of
course i can't talk about. I'll keep you posted as the plot thickens.

cheers

Joe

Dear Jessica,

It's actually well-established that psychoactive drugs can have specific and
selective effects on behavior, and that one can separate motor from
behavioral effects with appropriate experimental control. A Medline search
on the work of Robert L. Balster and/or Jenny Wiley should turn up numerous
examples in re the behavioral effects of cannabinoids and PCP-like compounds.
Another good line of work in general would be to search on inter-cranial
drug self-administration (ICSS). This experimental paradigm is primarily
used to examine the reinforcement efficacy, that is, abuse potential of
various drugs. In this work, the possibility of a motor compound must, of
course, be ruled out. Other brainstorms: the work of Klaus Miczek, Steve
Fowler, and/or Aaron Ettenberg. Hope this is helpful.

Sincerely,

Amy Compton

Subj:	corticosteroids in rabbits

Hi everybody,

I am writing a PhD about pups mortality in fattening rabbits and am looking
for baselines of corticosteron and cortisol in rabbits. I haven't found much
about baselines during my literature research. The values for corticosteron
we found in my animals were very low (1-15 nmol/l) and now I'm wondering, if
this is normal or due to inappropriate analysing methods. Actually the
values are so low, that the correctness of them gets rather weak with the
tests we use. We consider trying RIA kits for cortisol, but if values for
cortisol are 20 times weaker than for corticosteron, as is found in the
literature, the determination may get even harder. Maybe somebody knows a
method for such low concentrations?

I would be very grateful for any advice and thank you all for your
attention,

Best wishes,

Pia Baumann

The terms you might use are sedation or lethargy. You are correct that
sedation is a common side effect, but one that most owners do not
want. Most large scale studies (see King et al 2000: Appl Anim Behav
Sci.67:255 ; Hewson et al 1998 J Am Vet Med Assoc 213:1760 )report side
effects and sedation is one. Tardive dyskinesia or Parkinson-like signs
are rare as side effects of serotonin re-uptake blockers, which is what
is used for separation anxiety, compulsive-stereotypic behaviors. etc. It
has been reported in a horse given fluphenazine a long acting dopamine
blocker

which FYI includes ketamine. The experiential side effects of drugs commonly
used in animals are often overlooked. Thus PCP and ketmaine which are
pharmacologically similar, have similar experiential effects

low doses: anaesthesia

medium doses: anaesthesia + halluciantions

high doses (e.g. 100mg of ketmaine in a typical human adult): anaesthesia +
hallucinations + dissociative (out of body) experiences

even higher doses: loss of consciousness

Both PCP and ketmaine can also induce psychotic states.

Many human ketamine abusers (And particularly sensitive patients -
anaesthetic doses of ketmine induce dissociative hallucinations in 12% of
human patients) describe the dissociative (out of body) hallucinations as
being extremely frightening. For that matter, another related drug, DXM, has
the reputation amongst human users of being the most disturbing and
frightening psychadelic drug of abuse.

Anyhow, it makes you wonder what animals are experiencing when they
subjected to doses of ketamine sufficient to render them unconscious. It is
perhaps no surprise that many animals show extremely strong fear responses
when they come round. For instance (according to colleagues i have discussed
this with) rhesus tend to sepnd the next couple of hours balled up in the
furthest highest corner of their enclosure. Aside from welfare concerns,
this is obviously a serious concern for behavioural experiments!

moore food for thought,

cheers

Joe

Subj:	ISAE - less than one month to get those abstracts in

Hi everyone,

It's ISAE conference time again.

In my role as draconian arch collator of abstracts, chief juggler of the
scientific program, and collator of the conference proceedings (for which
read the stupid muggins who ended up with the gargantuan six month
headache), I thought i'd remind you all that the abstract deadline is the
15th of February. That's a month away!

The online system is working well (touchwood), and we already have a trickle
of abstracts submitted. So if anyone out there is feeling charitable then
please try to beat the inevitable rush.

To submit your abstract, just visit the website:

http://animalwelfare.ucdavis.edu/conference/ethology/ethologyconf.html

You'll find all sorts of information there. The abstract submission page has
full instructions, and it's a doddle to use. Just fill in the fields, cut
and paste your abstract from your word processor, and hit the submit button.
You'll get a confirmation message back from the server, at which point the
information is safely with us. You'll get a further e-mail from me within a
day or two just to set your mind at ease. Yep, ISAE is going super-high
tech.

I should also remind everyone that this is a wonderful opportunity to come
to CALIFORNIA, which is a very fun place so make sure you book a few extra
days to explore, shop in San Francisco, and generally do your thing. We've
got some great "non-technical" excursions in the works too (top secret,
hush-hush, Cheryl's been working too hard for me to let the cat out of the
bag).

So, I'm getting over excited about it already. See you there!

cheers

Joe

To those who have'nt heard till:

UK MPs Vote to Ban Hunting With Dogs

LONDON, United Kingdom, January 18, 2001 (ENS) - UK members of
parliament have voted overwhelmingly to ban hunting with dogs. In the
five hour debate prior to last night's free vote, one opposition MP
said shooting and fishing could be next.

MPs in the UK's lower house, the House of Commons, had three options:
allowing hunting with dogs under voluntary regulations, allowing it
under licence from a new hunting authority, or a ban.

Debbie, I'm sure you have probably already got these, but if not, try "Stress
and Animal Behaviour" by Broom and Johnson; "Biology of Behaviour" by Broom;
" Farm Animal Behaviour and Welfare" by Fraser (A.F.) and Broom; "Methods of
Sampling and Analysis of Data in Farm Animal Ethology" by Per Jensen, Bo
Algers, and Ingvar Ekesbo, and a cd-rom study aid on farm animal behavior
that Algers, Keeling, Jensen, others from Swedish University of Agricultural
Sciences, Skara, Sweden were putting together (maybe it is done now?);
"Livestock health and welfare" by Roy Moss, ed. Also, Klaus Vestergaard
prepared a film on nestbuilding behavior in sows in the pig park experiments
conducted by Jensen, et al. in Sweden. You may be able to get it from the
Department of Animal Environment and Health at SLU, Skara.

Subj:	Robot milking of cows

Hello,

My section at the County office deals with health and welfare
approval of new farm buildings. We have a number of applications for
bulding cow barns with milking robots. In some barns the feeding area
is arranged so the cows have to pass through the milking robot before
accessing the feed and water. We are concerned about negative effects
on the behaviour and health of in particular submissive cows.
Therefore I ask for any comments and possible relevant references on
this topic.

Hi all,

I am a new graduate student and am looking at a way to play back 4 days
of sounds, with 16 hrs per day. These sounds are currently recorded on
to VHS tapes, (3 tapes per day). Is there a way to have a vcr start
playing on some kind of external timer? Would a reel to reel be more
efficient for such long duration?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

The following message was sent to me by Don Lay. If you are interested
in obtaining more information concerning this announcement please
contact Don.

============================================================

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

I am writing this note to inform you that I am looking to hire
enthusiastic scientists and that I now have a new address.

The information for my new address can be found below in my signature.
I have accepted the position of research leader of the Livestock
Behavior Research Unit, which is a research facility managed by ARS (a
branch of the United States Dept. of Agriculture). Our web page needs
to be updated but you can link to it with the following address:
http://ag.ansc.purdue.edu/usda/ and you can find the full mission
statement of the USDA's animal well-being project listed at this
address:
   http://www.nps.ars.usda.gov/programs/programs.htm?&npnumber=105

Simply, the goal of this unit is to study animal behavior to increase
animal production as well as animal well-being, in poultry, dairy
cattle, and swine. Our unit is comprised of me, an ethologist/stress
physiologist; Susan Eicher, an immunologist; and Heng-wei Chen, a
neuro-physiologist/neuro-anatomist. In addition, Ed Pajor, an
ethologist, is on faculty here at Purdue and housed across the hall. Ed
is an active and integral part of our group.

I will be looking to hire an ethologist, and two stress/food
safety/physiologist to add to our staff in the future.

What I need right now is a Ph.D. or M.S., or possibly a post-doctoral
student(s) to work on a research project that I obtained funding for
this year. The project is designed to study prenatal stress in swine.
Briefly, sows will be exposed to exogenous hormone treatment, stressed
or act as controls and then their offspring will be evaluated based on
behavior, physiology, and immune function to determine how the stress
experienced by their dams affected their biology. The Ph.D. or M.S.
student would be registered and taking classes at Purdue university and
conducting the research with ARS.

If you are interested in working on this project, please let me know and
send your resume. And if you have any questions, please don't hesitate
to contact me using the following information.

   Thank you for your attention.

Dear All,
The Secretariat of the ISAE in the UK and Eire are now inviting registratio=
ns for the 2001 Regional meeting in York. A varied programme has been set =
by the ISAE and delegates will also benefit from the opportunity to attend =
sessions run by the British Society of Animal Science and the World Poultry=
Science Association at the associated daily rates.

Registration for the ISAE conference has been set =A335.00 for ISAE members=
 who register before 6th March 2001, and =A340.00 for non-members before th=
e 6th March.

These low rates make this an ideal opportunity to keep abreast with develop=
ments in Applied Ethology, dive into the topic of ethics in animal producti=
on and, coincidentally, spend the Easter weekend in the beautiful city of Y=
ork. If you need any more tempting, I have included the programme at the f=

For details of registration please visit the following URL, where you will =
also find the programme, information on the city of York, and a booking for=

nd!

o This conference is an essential part of your continuing professional dev=

Dear Friend,

I would like to draw the attention of the network to a book that i have just
produced, entitled 'Biological Psychology- An Integrative Approach' (pearson
Education, 2001). It is a basic introduction to biological psychology.
However, it attempts to do more than just introduce this subject. Rather, it
tries to be a synthesis of psychology and some of the basic issues in
classical ethology, such as modal action pattern and vacuum activity etc..
It also has a whole chapter on stress, which might prove of interest to
applied ethologists.

For further details, please see:

VOLUNTEERS POSITIONS TO OFFER IN A RESEARCH PROJECT WITH ALPINE CHAMOIS

I have again some volunteer positions to fill for a research project in the Berner Oberland / Switzerland. The behaviour of alpine chamois is observed in their winter habitat on the Maennlichen Mt. above Wengen (right in the heart of the famous Jungfrau region). Habitat use and activity under different environmental conditions are investigated with radio-collared and marked animals.

Positions are available during the following periods (to participate in more than one period is possible) and will be filled as soon as possible:

March 14 to 31 / April 1 to 18 / April 19 to May 6 / May 7 to 25

Scientific knowledge is not necessary, but applicants are expected to have a general interest in biological and conservation topics. The willingness to work outdoor under harsh conditions (in winter and at night) and in unregular intervals is required. Experience in high mountains is not necessary.

The main duty is the triangulation of the radio-collard chamois from permanent towers in Wengen. This is carried out regularly during the whole winter. Other data sampling events, like behaviour observations, recording of environmental conditions, etc. are only done on rare occasions.

Volunteers have the opportunity to take part and actively work in a current and conservation relevant research project. We provide them with lodging in our field station inWengen together with other project staff and volunteers, and with project related travel expenses in Switzerland.

To receive more information and to apply please submit your prefered dates to:

<P align=center>VOLUNTEERS POSITIONS TO OFFER IN A RESEARCH PROJECT WITH ALPINE
CHAMOIS</P></B></FONT><FONT color=#000000 face=Arial>
<P align=justify>I have again some volunteer positions to fill for a research
project in the Berner Oberland / Switzerland. The behaviour of alpine chamois is
observed in their winter habitat on the Maennlichen Mt. above Wengen (right in
the heart of the famous Jungfrau region). Habitat use and activity under
different environmental conditions are investigated with radio-collared and
marked animals.</P>
<P align=justify>Positions are available during the following periods (to
participate in more than one period is possible) and will be filled as soon as
possible:</P><B>
<P align=justify>March 14 to 31 / April 1 to 18 / April 19 to May 6 / May 7 to
25</P></B>
<P align=justify>Scientific knowledge is not necessary, but applicants are
expected to have a general interest in biological and conservation topics. The
willingness to work outdoor under harsh conditions (in winter and at night) and
in unregular intervals is required. Experience in high mountains is not
necessary. </P>
<P align=justify>The main duty is the triangulation of the radio-collard chamois
from permanent towers in Wengen. This is carried out regularly during the whole
winter. Other data sampling events, like behaviour observations, recording of
environmental conditions, etc. are only done on rare occasions.</P>
<P align=justify>Volunteers have the opportunity to take part and actively work
in a current and conservation relevant research project. We provide them with
lodging in our field station inWengen together with other project staff and
volunteers, and with project related travel expenses in Switzerland.</P>

Dear all,

Could anyone help me to find the exact references of a book titled "Behaviour
guide to african mammals", of which I don't know the author either the
publication date. Thanks in advance.

Jean-Pascal,

It could be:
The Behaviour Guide to African Mammals. Richard Estes. 1991. Russel =
Friedman
Books, Halfway House, South Africa. Also available from University of
California Press, maybe.

Best wishes,

Jeremy
