This position has a 70% research and 30% teaching appointment. The emphasis of the position is in the area of applied animal behavior. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to establish a strong, independent and externally funded research program in applied animal behavior. For appointment at the Associate Professor level, individuals must have an externally funded research program and an established record of productivity. Areas of research should focus on animal behavior and address current problem areas and contemporary issues in animal agriculture. Potential areas of research may include, but are not limited to, aspects of social behavior, environmental design or management geared towards the improvement of the health, performance and welfare in species of agricultural interest. The appointee is expected to participate in the training of graduate and undergraduate students and will teach an advanced course in animal behavior at the undergraduate level, and a graduate course in their area of expertise. The Department of Animal and Avian Sciences has an active program in applied animal behavior and welfare. The successful candidate will contribute to the expansion of the existing program and will have opportunities for collaboration with existing faculty members with interests in behavior as well as in other disciplines. The Department has 25 faculty and offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Molecular and Cellular Biology, Growth and Development, Nutrition, Neuroendocrinology, Behavior and Biostatistics are major areas of Department research activity. Responsibilities: The selected candidate is expected to establish and maintain an internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program and contribute to the undergraduate and graduate teaching programs within her/his area of expertise. Preferred research foci include, but are not limited to: the influence of environment on the development of behavior, the use of genomics tools to discover and understand mechanisms related to behavior, individual characteristics and stress susceptibility, and behavioral problems. Teaching responsibilities include an introductory animal behavior and welfare course and an advanced (upper level undergraduate/graduate course. The selected candidate also will be expected to assist with the animal welfare/assessment competition program. Emphasis will be placed on leadership to facilitate local, state, regional and national research and education initiatives to enhance public and private funding opportunities for animal behavior, welfare and assessment programs. Qualifications: A Ph.D. in the animal sciences, zoology, veterinary science or closely related area with emphasis in applied animal welfare and/or ethology. Training and experience in the discipline of animal welfare science with an understanding of behavioral biology, methodologies to assess welfare and stress, and a strong understanding of the animal sciences and husbandry of food-producing and recreational domestic animals. Background and training in epidemiology, physiology, or psychology also will be extremely beneficial. Evidence of collaboration and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team also is required.
