Dear all,

I am trying to find papers that discuss the effect of international
trade on animal welfare (eg the effect, if any, of NAFTA on farm
animal welfare).

I know nothing of this area and have not yet found anything specific
in searches on Agricola, Google and various websites. I would be very
grateful for any tips or contacts or references that members could
provide.

With thanks,

Sincerely,

Caroline Hewson

Hello Caroline!

try Eurogroup for animal welfare. On their web site you can access links
on WTO. WWW.eurogroupanimalwelfare.org. I also suggest you use the
"search" option on the USA Animal welfare information center
www.awionline.org. On the Compassion in world farming web site
www.ciwf.co.uk there is a report from Peter Stevenson: The WTO rules:
their advers impact on animal welfare. All those should be a good
starting point

Good luck!

Hi,

We are two students of the veterinary school in Ghent,
Belgium and we are planning to carry out an experiment
on enviromental enrichment in horses, under
supervision of Professor Ödberg.
We found an article in a local newspaper describing an
experiment (by D.Mills) on the use of mirrors in order
to decrease the frequency of weaving. We were
wondering wether or not there are any published
articles available?
We found out that there has been a workshop on
environmental enrichment of horses, a few weeks ago.
We were wondering if somebody could inform us were we
can get hold of the texts used at that workshop.

Yours faithfully,
Judith 'T Kindt, Eva Van Avermaet.

Dear Kristin,

concerning Polart You are quite right, We are on the same dilemma. Sorry I
speak of S 610 (I don't have the experience with 810) but we tried S610 as=
 a
follow up model of polar accurex. The dilemma is that the code cannot be
show and therefor we decided that we can't use S 610 for our research
(animal transport) for the reasons You described. I had quite a discussion
with the polar people in Germany because they had assured us that the new
ones had all funcions the old ones had but some more advantages . At the
moment we are trying the "team" system, which has only the sender on the
animal and all the rest works by interface. this looked very useful, Howev=
er
we have not finished tests and one BIG disadvantage is that the storage
capacity seems to be limited to eleven hours independently of storage
interval.....

I don't know how important animal research is for polar, but my impression
is, that we are too few and they are not flexible enough to change their
systems...

You can put this into the net (I was only forwarded the question)

Cheers

Hello

thanks everybody who responded to my salivary cortisol in cows request! Yo=
ur
help has been greatly appreciated. When I get around to it I will send the
compiled reference list to the net.

In the meanwhile I have another question. Has anybody tried the new Polar
heart rate monitors S810 yet? We've just purchased quite a few, welcoming
the doubled storage space since the Vantage NV model. However, the S810 se=
em
to have the following unexpected quirk: I can't get them to display the
codes found in coded transmission! In the old models this was done easily =
by
holding the monitor close to the transmitter. For the new model this means=
 I
have coded transmission but I do not know on what frequency. So if I measu=
re
15 animals simultaneously, while all of them have coded
transmission some may have the same code (i.e. same transmission wavelengt=
h)
without my knowledge! This could lead not only to loss of data, but also t=
o
errors in the data where a monitor receives signals from another animal's
transmitter - and in some cases these errors may not be detectable!

My local distributor does not know a solution and I'm waiting for a reply
from Polar. Does anybody know a way to display the codes in the S810?

If it is true that there is no way to display the codes, this makes the S8=
10
higly unsuitable for many kinds of animal research and those contemplating
to purchase the new model should be aware of this.

Cheers,

Kristin Hagen

Dear Karen, Satu and others who answered my S810 question or have an interest in this problem!

Thank you for your answers! We are clearly not the only ones with the problem, that none of S-series Polar monitors allow checking the transmission code. A bothersome but feasible solution has been offered by Polar in Finland:

A monitor of one of the old models can be used to check the code, even when recording is done with a new monitor. The transmission code is chosen by the transmitter - once it has chosen a code, transmission will be on this same frequency with any monitor near it (this is also why, to change the code, it is necessary to take the transmitter off and dry the electrodes and wait 30 s).

This means it is necessary to use an extra monitor of the old series. Polar offered to send us an Accurex+ for this purpose, so I suppose they would offer this to others with the same problem.

Cheers,

Kristin

  Dear Kristin,

I asked your problem from Polar and they gave one tip.
It is true that from the new S-series monitors you can not see the code. But if you have one old Vantage NV monitor you can use it to check the code when you start the new S monitor. If the code is allready in use you have to activate the monitor again (dry, moisture and put the transmitter on again). It is not possible to get a new code by just restarting.
I hope this will help you!
I only have Vantage NV monitors untill now!

  All the best,
  Satu

Dear all
I dont know if anyone can help me but I'm trying to trace a reference to a
peice of work I read some time ago.
The work looked at different reinforcement schedules in sucessive
approximation (behavioural shaping)
In one group the standard was successively increased once the animal had
reached a certain criterion of performance (ie animals were rewarded only as
they got better)
In the other the same steps were identified in the training prgramme, and a
similar system used but the animals were occasionally rewarded for lower
level perfomance.
The results indicated that the latter technique achieved the ultimate goal
more rapidly.
If this rings a bell with anyone and they have any idea of the author or the
reference I would very much appreciate it as my mind is failing me on this
one

THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES OF SCIENCE/NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL
DIVISION ON EARTH AND LIFE STUDIES
BOARD ON AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

November 16, 2001

Dear Colleague,

The National Research Council recently established a committee to
"Define
Science-based Concerns Associated with the Products of Animal Biotechnology".
Our committee held its first meeting on August 27th and 28th, 2001, during
which
we clarified our goals and approaches to meeting this charge. Our committee
is
now in the phase of gathering information. The final product from our
deliberations will be a brief report.

Our committee has broad expertise in molecular genetics, animal science,
and other relevant areas. However, we think it is essential for us to seek
input
from individuals with diverse perspectives on environmental, food, and animal
safety issues, so that we do not miss important insights. We are contacting
you
based on your previous interest in issues related to agricultural
biotechnology.

The goals of our committee are as follows:

1) Develop a consensus listing of risk issues in the food safety, animal
safety,
and environmental safety areas for various animal biotechnology product
categories. These categories include, but are not limited to, gene therapy,
germ
line modifications, knockout technologies, and cloning.
2) Provide criteria for selection of those risk issues considered most
important
that need to be addressed or managed for the various product categories.
3) Identify and justify risk issues that were considered but not identified as

important for certain product categories.

We would appreciate it if you could help us meet this charge. We are
committed to getting sufficiently broad input to ensure that all important
perspectives and information are considered. Please send us a concise letter
describing what you see as specific concerns or issues associated with animal
biotechnology within the three risk areas of food safety, animal safety, and
environmental safety that need attention. We would be particularly
appreciative
if you would emphasize potential positive and/or negative impacts that you
think
are underrepresented in most discussions of animal biotechnology. Please
send
your letter via e-mail to kwaddell@nas.edu. Your letter may also be faxed to
him at 202-334-1978.

It would be very much appreciated if you could help us meet our goal by
returning your letter on or before November 30th. We are in the midst of
drafting our report and will need as much time as possible to assess outside
information such as that in your letter. If we have follow-up questions
regarding your letter, we might contact you by phone or e-mail.

If you have a colleague or friend who is likely to have a novel
perspective
on these issues, we would appreciate your forwarding this letter to that
person.
While we are not trying to assess the weight of public opinion, we are trying
to
identify the diversity of perspectives in relation to our charge.

Attached you will find a committee membership list. You may also want to
visit the National Academies

Greetings to all.

Does anyone have views and or information on what might be biologically
considered an optimum size (optimum in a survival sense) for an equine harem
group and why?

I imagine we would have to assume sufficient resources, with no single
restricting factors (water etc).

Dear Colleagues working on pet behaviour

I am receiving many emails from the web page www.animal-info.net , of people
asking me for advice about the behaviour of their pets (mainly dogs)

As I am doing the whole web page myself I can't manage doing everything and
I would ask for collaborators. Also I am not a dog behaviour specialist and
I think these issues should be tackled by those who know.
My idea is , those people working on the subject could run the pet
behaviour page by just writing short answers to publish on the page. Then if
you want to continue the consultation with the person you would be able to
do so in private over email and what ever payment arrangements you may do,
will be private between you and the client.

We could then advertise several pet behaviour consultants on that page
willing to provide paid advice over the Internet.

If you are interested please send me an email.

Dear all=20
I dont know if anyone can help me but I'm trying to trace a reference to a
peice of work I read some time ago.
The work looked at different reinforcement schedules in sucessive
approximation (behavioural shaping)
In one group the standard was successively increased once the animal had
reached a certain criterion of performance (ie animals were rewarded only as
they got better)
In the other the same steps were identified in the training prgramme, and a
similar system used but the animals were occasionally rewarded for lower
level perfomance.=20
The results indicated that the latter technique achieved the ultimate goal
more rapidly. >>

Subj:	RE: reinforcement schedules

For those interested, here's the full reference to the citation given:

  Midgley, M., Lea, S.E.G., & Kirby, R. M. (1989). Algorithmic Shaping and
Misbehavior in the Acquisition of Token Deposit by Rats. Journal of the
Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 52, 27-40.

Based on the original post, unless I'm not understanding this research or
that post, I do not believe this is the reference wanted. This article
deals with directly examining a systematic way of measuring the shaping
process (algorithmic shaping), as well as comparing the misbehavior of
organisms during such shaping programs in the form of instinctual drift
across different rates of reinforcement. Also, the study compares
algorithmic shaping to "hand" shaping, or what we might normally encounter
in a non-systematized shaping procedure. I've just read this article for
the first time, thanks to Dr. Hetts reference, and it truly is an
interesting read...but as I said, I don't believe it's what you're looking
for.

If I understand the original post, it sounds like what is being talked
about is not only moving up in your approximations in the shaping program,
but occasionally moving down as well. Of course this article does deal with
that issue, (the selected response might "move down" in the experiment in
the sense that an "easier" approximation is gone back to if not enough
responses occured) but I don't believe it compares this method to the the
simple move forward technique.

There are a few issues that could be dealt with, and although I can only
talk loosely about any references, I'll hope that this may help in some
way...

When one only moves up in approximations without backing up
occasionally, it's very likely that some steps may be too large, and/or the
organism does not have a high rate of responding for that selected response
or approximation. This can be severe enough to produce ratio strain, which
may resemble an extinction schedule, and can slow the shaping process down.
If one were to occasionally reinforce lower levels of performance, it's
likely that there would be a higher density of reinforcement overall. This
would mean that more reinforcers were delivered over the same amount of
time. According to trainers like Bob Bailey and the Brelands, this is
crucial for speeding up the shaping process. Unfortunately, I don't know of
any specific references on this subject and don't know of any existing data
on this density of reinforcement phenomena...if one does turn up, I'd be
delighted to get the reference and check it out.

I've also heard that Dr. Ogden Lindsley has talked about reinforcing
"bands" of responses. From what I understand, this has something to do with
reinforcing a range of responses, instead of simply focusing on one response
at a time in a stepladder-like function. If this were to be sucessful in
any way, I'd guess it was because you produce a higher amount of variability
in responding when you reinforce such bands. Due to that variability, you'd
be more likely to get those important "insightful" accidents most shapers
look for that allow us to occasionally skip a few steps. You'd also be less
likely to get stuck on some response the animal continues to exhibit even
when the criterion has shifted. Again, I don't know of any specific
references, but I'd suggest contacting Dr. Jesus Rosales-Ruiz here at U. of
North Texas or Dr. Ogden Lindsley at Kansas University for more information.

I realize this is highly speculative and giving out clues to references
so distant Sherlock Holmes might have difficulties, so I do apologize.
Hopefully this helps in some way...or at least sparks some other interesting
ideas/thoughts/listserv topics...

Eddie F...

there is reference to a survey that found the market value of English
Thoroughbreds to fall by 37% should they develop a stereotypy. However,
when one checks for the reference one merely finds the words "deleted in

Subject: market value of Thoroughbreds & stereotypies

On page 914 of

MARSDEN, M.D. (1999). Behavioral Problems (Stable Vices). In P.T.
Colohan, J.G. Mayhew, A.M. Merritt & J.N. Moore (Eds.) Equine Medicine and
Surgery - Volume I. (5th Ed.) St Louis, MI: Mosby Inc. (pp914-931)

there is reference to a survey that found the market value of English
Thoroughbreds to fall by 37% should they develop a stereotypy. However,
when one checks for the reference one merely finds the words "deleted in
proof". Does anyone out there know what this study was? who did it? when?
Are there any similar studies out there?

Thanks,

Dear all,
I think the topic came out on the list a few weeks ago, but does anybody out there do any research on the welfare aspects of the use of bits in horses? I have a friend who designs bits and would like to get in contact with people studying the subject.
Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Marine Cassoret.

We have done some work on this comparing the Dutch gag, snaffle and bitless
bridles. We are still in the process of writing the work up, but there are
clearly differences suggestive of differences in impact on welfare
Sorry to be so vague at present

I have done work on bit design, history, and its impact on 'outline' and
exercise tolerance. I would be happy to discuss this further and you are
most welcome to pass my contact details on.
