I am having difficulty persuading some of my colleagues that we should try to replicate the groups because of the lack of independence between individuals in a group. They can see that for measures such as behaviour there might be some justification for replicating the groups but are convinced that for measures such as milk yield, bodyweight/condition score etc. that the animal is the experimental unit. The overriding consensus is that there is no point in splitting the animals on each treatment into a number of groups owing to practical difficulties associated with managing them. Nevertheless, I am requesting that at a minimum, the cows in each treatment be split into two groups (but maybe it's useless to fight for replication unless I can have more than two replicates per treatment?).
