Subject: Seagull shoplifting From: Gabriela Olmos Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 12:12:09 +0100 To: applied-ethology@sask.usask.ca Dear all, I got this email this morning. Everybody around the facilities think is funny and cute. I might get worried for many reasons that I might not express here, because I am not an expert. This is not the first time I see it, and I am sure that is not the first time you have seen it either. Hence I would like to hear your comments. Thanks Gabriela Olmos Antillon Dairy Production Research Centre Moorepark, Teagasc Fermoy, Co. Cork Tel +353(0) 25 42366 gabriela.olmos@teagasc.ie A seagull in Scotland has developed the habit of stealing chips from a neighborhood shop. The seagull waits until the shopkeeper isn't looking, and then walks into the store and grabs a snack-size bag of cheese Doritos. Once outside, the bag gets ripped open and shared by other birds. The seagull's shoplifting started early this month when he first swooped into the store in Aberdeen, Scotland, and helped himself to a bag of chips. Since then, he's become a regular. He always takes the same type of chips. Customers have begun paying for the seagull's stolen bags of chips because they think it's so funny. It has been a good 4 ½ years, but the time has come to move on to another venture. This move has me jumping across the pond, so to speak, to London where I will be working for another animal advocacy group, World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). I believe my email address will be JenniferLanier@wspa.org.uk but I could be wrong. You can always reach me at jenniferlanier@gmail.com. Until our paths cross again, Jennifer Jennifer L. I would appreciate chatting with a researcher familiar with those or other software packages compatible with Mac. My subjects are cats housed in single cages. My video files will be in MPEG 4 format (unless someone has a better suggestion). I am hoping to find a software package with similar functions to Observer Thanks Nadine Gourkow Subject: Re: behaviour Analysis Software From: Simon Gadbois Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2007 09:08:20 -0300 To: Nadine Gourkow CC: Applied-ethology@sask.usask.ca Hi have used both. The Observer is still more powerful (and Noldus Inc is telling me it will run on Intel Macs with Windows) but JWatcher is quite amazing for a free program. It can also run analyses (e.g., Markovian analysis of action sequences) something that ODlog can't do. Email me if you want more details. S.
