BTV and EHDV are widely distributed in temperate and tropical climates worldwide. However, HD in free-ranging wildlife populations has been reported only in the United States and Canada. From the top map one can see that both BTV and EDHV are widespread in the US. Disease in wildlife due to these viruses, i.e. HD, has been reported in numerous states, generally located in a wide diagonal band extending from the southeastern to the northwestern corner of the country, including California (bottom map). It has been reported sporadically in localized areas of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
