National Buffalo Association Publication Archives

The current National Bison Association was formed in 1995 by the merging of the National Buffalo Association and The American Bison Association. Prior to the merge the official publication of the former National Buffalo Association was called "Buffalo!". Presented below are some articles of interest (to me at least) from various issues of Buffalo! This material is subject to copyright and appears here courtesy of the US National Bison Association.

The Buffalo's Revenge
Patrick Owens, reprinted from The San Francisco Examiner,
Buffalo!, Vol 13, No.6, November - December, 1985.

A great piece about stupid people interacting with bison. Ouch!

Studying The Behaviour of The American Buffalo
Viktor Reinhart DVM, Buffalo!, Vol 13, No.6, November - December, 1985.

Some observations about bison interaction with each other and humans.

Doc Ken's Korner - Paratuberculosis or Johne's Disease
Dr. Ken Throlson, Buffalo!, Vol 14, No.1, January - February, 1986.

This short article by the original "buffalo vet" briefly discusses Mycobacterium paratuberculosis infection or Johne's Disease in bison. There are more modern diagnostic tests than what Dr Ken writes about here, but they still don't work well on the individual animal!

Parsites and Ivomec / Time to Treat Inhibited Ostertagia
Editorial, Buffalo!, Vol 14, No.1, January - February, 1986.

A short discussion about treating parasites.

Doc Ken's Korner - Weaning
Dr. Ken Throlson, Buffalo!, Vol 14, No.2, March - April, 1986.

This short article by the original "buffalo vet" briefly discusses weaning bison calves.

"Hevy" Fences

excerpted from "Why They Call Him The Buffalo Doctor" by Jean Cummings
Buffalo!, Vol 143, No.2, March - April, 1986.

A humourous look at bison ranching. This book is now out of print. Last I checked on Amazon.com there were 2 used copies on offer.

Doc Ken's Korner - Feeding Trial Results
Dr. Ken Throlson, Buffalo!, Vol 14, No.3, May - June, 1986.

This short article by the original "buffalo vet" briefly discusses weight gains observed in bison being used as controls in a TB experiment. The Doc has some interesting comments on the potential of bison to gain on good quality feed.

Prairie Cashmere - Buffalo Fur
Diane Grant, originally published in the Rapid City Journal
Buffalo!, Vol 14, No.3, May - June, 1986.

There aren't many articles about bison fiber these days so I included this news item.

Doc Ken's Korner - Flushing For Breeding Success
Dr. Ken Throlson, Buffalo!, Vol 13, No.1, July - August, 1986.

This short article by the original "buffalo vet" briefly discusses "flushing" for breeding success in bison. Also included are some 1986 prices for live bison and an interesting carcass cutting analysis showing the percentages of total carcass weight for each of the various retail cuts of meat..

Beligerent
James H. Shaw, reprinted from Animal Kingdom Magazine
Buffalo!, Vol 14, No.5, September-October, 1986.

This is a very engaging story about a wildlife ecologist's encounters with bison and the lessons he learned (sometimes the hard way) about bison behaviour.

High-Tensile Wirw Fencing
Editorial, Buffalo!, Vol 14, No.5, September-October, 1986.

A short note about the early use of high tensile strength fencing techniques for bison.
