Chemotherapy is Dr. Gupta's major area of research interest. He has studied pharmacokinetic properties of antibacterial agents such as chloramphenicol and cephalosporins, in different animal species.
He has also studied mode of action of anticancer drugs, viz. biological alkylating agents, antimetabolites (methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil) and enzymes involved in DNA synthesis.
For the last 15 years, major emphasis has been in the development of biologically active compounds with an improved pharmacological and toxicological profile against herpes viruses and Human Immunodeficiency Virus, the etiological agent of acquired immunodeficiency disease syndrome
(AIDS). Investigations deal with synthesis, evaluation of antiviral activity in cell culture, pharmacokinetics, efficacy (animal models), metabolism in situ and in vivo, mechanism of action and toxicology. The research programme emphasizes study of molecular conformation of active and inactive molecules to understand the geometry of pharmacophores responsible for biological activity and toxicity.
